I feel like Meza and Di Maria just have zero desire to track back. Obv don't want to waste Messi in that role and Mascherano is slow and old. CBs aren't interested in closing that space so it feels like there's a mile between Messi and Otamendi and Rojo with nothing in between it every time Iceland gets the ball.

A few reasons why a nation of 350k ppl has such a team.

20 years ago the national league started building indoor stadiums in every town and hiring professional coaches for the youth league. For the first time ever Icelanders could practice football all year instead of just in the summer.
10 years ago the national team got Lars Lagerback as their head coach. He introduced a totally new level of professionalism and fundamentals which transformed the team.
Being one of the most egalitarian, healthiest and happiest nations in the world doesn't hurt.

Again, Mascherano is up there far too high. Probably in no real danger today but it just seems so careless. Play from the right and let Messi and Kun work. No reason to have a 34 year old Argentinian Michael Bradley passing into nothingness.

What on earth do the argies do during practice sessions? They have like zero interplay between each other, never find overlapping runs, and have zero creativity on the ball. Even just from watching barca games I know when messi wants a give and go, how do his teammates not know that themselves??
