I remember them mentioning that only one team had ever LOST their first game and advanced before the 2006 World Cup (Australia vs Japan was first game and thus why it was important)

It was only later I realised that there had only been 2 Cups before then with 32 teams and what a sample size was.

Since then there have been a heap of teams that lost first up and advanced

2006: Ukraine lost to Spain and then beat Saudi and Tunisia
Ghana lost to Italy and then beat Czech and USA

2014: Greece lost to Colombia, then drew Japan and beat Ivory Coast in the last minute
Uruguay lost to Costa Rica, beat England and Italy
Algeria lost to Belgium, and then beat South Korea and drew Russia

For most of those teams, they lost the best team in the group, and then came back vs two weaker teams. (Uruguay the exception)

My guess is that if you lose to a non-#1 seed team, you are incredibly ****ed the rest of the way, which logically makes sense. (If the teams were equal, it would make sense Australia had more chance of advancing than Peru, given that France > Denmark by most metrics).

Just skimmed the Group B thread from yesterday (I couldn't watch a single game yesterday), and I see people complaining about a female commentator on (what I assume) English coverage. German TV has a female commentator this time around, and she's doing Denmark - Australia right now. I quite like her. She's knowledgeable, seems to have done her homework dilligently (can say a thing or two about every player), and she's just in general talking way less rubbish than many a male counterpart of hers in the commentator scene.

Yeah, I obviously don't know whether she's any good or not. I just read that thread while listening to the German one, and was pleasantly surprised that she's not sucking as much as most other commentators.
