Q. WTF is this? Why have I never heard of it?

It’s a new tournament intended to reduce the number of meaningless friendlies.

Q. Cool. So how does it work.

UEFA’s 55 nations are divided into 4 leagues. The top league has 12 teams, the rest have 12/15/16. Each league is divided into 4 groups of 3 / 4 teams who play each other twice. For example, here’s League A.

The top and bottom teams in each group get promoted/relegated to the adjacent league (this tournament is biannual).

Q. What about the teams that win League A groups?

They play June 5th, 6th & 9th 2019 to crown the UEFA Nations League champions!

Q. Where does that take place?

One of the four finalists will host. TBD.

Q. Is this prestigious?

Tough to say. It’s a difficult tournament to win with a higher average ELO than the World Cup or Euros. It *should* be prestigious but whether it is or not remains to be seen. Why is the FA Cup so much more prestigious than the League Cup?

Q. Why aren’t there separate group threads like for the World Cup?

I don’t think there’s demand. Someone may start a separate one for the finals, or if demand suffices group threads for the next iteration.

Q. What are the odds?

Q. Why are some of the groups much easier than the others?

The draw took place in January using UEFA national team coefficients (lol) for seedings. Thus we end up with a group with both Netherlands, who didn't even qualify for the last Euros or World Cup and inter universal laughing stocks Germany who have a losing record during the last eight years of World Cup.

Q. Is this just a one off tournament or does it have other implications?

The latter. Euro 2020 qualifying consists of 10 groups of 5 / 6 teams, the top two from each group qualifying. Then the top four teams from each of League D-A who *didn’t* qualify automatically playoff for an extra spot.

Q. Who are the top four teams who didn’t qualify? I.e how are teams ranked?

Group placement then standard fayre such as points, goal difference and so on. This will likely be the four group winners for League D but will get more complicated in the higher leagues.

Q. What if less than four teams from League A *don’t* qualify automatically.

They’ll fill the extra spaces for the four team playoffs with teams from League B. So let’s say the League B playoffs are two group winners and two group runners up and 10/12 League A teams qualify automatically.

Here the “League A” playoffs will be the two teams from League A that didn’t qualify automatically, plus the two remaining group runners up from League B. Unless one of those runners up qualified automatically, when the best third placed team from League B will make the “League A” playoffs and so on.

Q. Let’s see League B - D.

Sure.

Q. Wait. You’re saying one of those schlubs from League D are guaranteed to qualify for the Euros?

Yup.

Q. Doesn’t this mean you’d rather be the best team in League D than the worst in League C? Isn’t this perverse?

Uh huh. Sure seems so!

Q. Anything else?

Oh yeah. Seeding for Euro 2020 qualifying is based on placement in the 2018/2019 UEFA Nations League. League A teams want to finish in the top 10/12. League B teams want to finish in the top 8/12 (i.e top two in their group). League C teams want to finish in the top 6/15 and so on.

Q. Is it coming home?

I mean, clearly this ^^

However, given there is a possibility of international breaks containing some good, meaningful football, I'm willing to give it a chance.

I'm still quite confused about qualification though. Are you a lock to miss out on qualifying if you finish bottom of a League A group?

I approve of this format just because it means we can LOL at nations when they get relegated (and yeah i realise who the most likely candidate for this is, lol)

Qualifying is a mostly separate event. Two of the four teams that finish bottom of League A will be second seeds for the qualifying draw (ten groups of 5/6 teams, the top ten seeds will be the top ten finishers in League A and so on).

The top two in each qualifying group make it to the Euros (20 teams).

The top four teams in League D that *didn't* finish in the top two in their qualifying group (surely the four UNL group winners) playoff for the twenty-first spot at the Euros.

The top four teams in League C that *didn't* finish in the top two in their qualifying group (maybe the four UNL group winners, maybe three UNL group winners plus the best player group runner up) playoff for the twenty-second spot at the Euros.

The top four teams in League B that *didn't* finish in the top two in their qualifying group (maybe one UNL group winner and three UNL runners up winners) playoff for the twenty-third spot at the Euros.

The top four teams in League A that *didn't* finish in the top two in their qualifying group playoff for the twenty-fourth spot at the Euros. Since it's likely 9 or more League A teams finish in the top two in their qualifying group, this playoff will look something like: the two teams from League A that didn't qualify + a runner up from League B and two third placed teams from League B.

tl/dr - teams that finish bottom of League A are still likely to qualify for Coming Home Fest 2020 but they may face seeding issues which make it less likely.

qualification will be like it always is, and has 0 to do with this new league thing

if you **** up qualification but do really well in the league thing then you get another chance to qualify

To win their groups:

Netherlands; Iceland 8/1
Croatia 11/2
Poland 9/2
Switzerland 11/4
England 9/4
Portugal 6/4
France 5/4; Italy 5/4
Germany evens
Spain 4/5
Belgium 4/9

btw I like this tournament lots (some of the second chance qualifying needs work).

- At least four more competitive matches per team per year.
- Interested in others' thoughts but I think teams will take it seriously and play their best.
- Elite teams getting relegated due to variance will be hilarious.
- Elite teams failing to get immediately re-promoted will be hilarious.
- Teams like Wales and Ireland and so on will get to League A and it will probably be a big deal for them?
- Scotland will eventually get to League A and it will probably be a big deal for them?
- Winning the competition will be prestigious? At least to countries that haven't won a bunch recently
- No stupid third/fourth playoff

Spoiler:
There is a third/fourth playoff

Sorry you didn't understand. Please (genuinely) let me know if you have a question and I will answer it!!

There's a ~4 minute video which I think explains Euro 2020 excellently - maybe you will have more luck with this??

It's separate but linked. Winning this doesn't guarantee qualification - it guarantees

i) A top seed for the Euro 2020 qualifying draw
ii) A place in a four team play-off (along with other non-automatically-qualifying League A/B nations) if England (or whoever) don't finish in the top two of their qualifying group.
