Clubs like Madrid aren't really concerned about whether they are getting value or not. They have 11 starting places to fill once or twice a week, they are looking to get the best players they possibly can into those 11 spaces.
How much is too much for these clubs to spend on one player? €150m? €200m? More? I don't know, but it is likely that they can afford the €120m or whatever. If he just turns out to be good rather than the world-beater that he looks like being, they can probably swallow losing that amount of money on the odd occassion. City dusted off half that amount on John Stones.
Mbappe looks like a unique asset. Should they not pay up for him now, he'll likely go to the other club and the opportunities to find someone that good don't come around that often.
