I think this has been shown to have a pretty negligible effect a lot of the time. Shirt sales mean basically nothing. There's probably some value to having a marquee signing, but I doubt it actually results in much $$$ back.

Clubs like Madrid aren't really concerned about whether they are getting value or not. They have 11 starting places to fill once or twice a week, they are looking to get the best players they possibly can into those 11 spaces.

How much is too much for these clubs to spend on one player? €150m? €200m? More? I don't know, but it is likely that they can afford the €120m or whatever. If he just turns out to be good rather than the world-beater that he looks like being, they can probably swallow losing that amount of money on the odd occassion.
