those teams have qualifying matches that present some sort of a challenge before the event though, the host nation usually plays much harder friendlies precisely because they don't need to go through qualifying

you kinda missed the point he was talking about X vs Y in soccer not happening, I said it does happen when X or Y are the hosting nation because they don't have qualifying games. I think the same reasons apply here because the US didn't have qualifying games (or any competitive games for that matter) in their preparation
