This is essentially correct.

Some rich ******* bought the Indianapolis speedway and the created his own racing league that you had to be in to race in the 500. All the top drivers told him to **** off and a bunch of scrubs started running in the race. Took years to get everyone back and by that time nobody cared as much.

TLDR: Rich dude was more interested in making money than growing the sport. ****ed it all up.

Holy **** that cameraman is so lucky.
I've worked the 500 as a cameraman seeing a car out of control even remotely near you is scary as hell.

Wreck happened right in front of me (I'm right in between Turn 1 and 2). My buddy was checking his phone when it happened, but I saw it - Dixon's car got a ridiculous amount of air.

those cameramen in the concrete cavities down the straightaway are crazy mo-fos.

edit: don't see as many (or any) as there has been in years past.

Moved outside Indy in 2015 so this is my first year in the ridiculously dated tv blackout. 300000 people at the race and everyone around here just shrugs at the tv blackout.

So naturally I'm watching it via a Canadian feed online. I've never seen so many anti drug ads before. And little ceasars is expensive up there.

As for the wreck, holy cow at walking away from that. That goes for the photographer by the fence too.

stupid question, but do drivers in Indy cars not need to shift gears? From the cockpit views, the drivers don't take their hands of the steering wheel at all...I just always assumed they were shifting at times...

Love the flower cam as the cars WHOOOSH by!

dunno but gear changes are presumably done using paddles either side of the wheel

If you mean the barrier between the track and the pits those are all robocams.

Pretty sure they've been gone a while now. I worked the race in 2012 (LINK to old 2+2 TR about it here ) and they were empty if IIRC.

Also Alonso would have 0 skill edge on the the drivers who have a lot experience racing an oval. There is definitely a separate skill set required to keep the car going at max speed on an oval.

just turned this on and they gave some guy a penalty for blocking another guy. why can't you block people from passing you? That seems like it should be an integral part of the sport and needs to be legal.

occasionally this happens in f1 where a driver loses a small piece of wing and the car responds positively. must be embarrassing for the aerodynamicist

Just left Speedway, IN after camping the night prior to the race. Hard to imagine a better day for racing. B-52 flyover prior was pretty breathtaking as well.

No idea how Dixon is still walking, he landed with the side of the driver's pod directly perpendicular to the fence. The technology in those cars, especially after DW's death is insane.
