Re: Poker Journal App on iOS8 for iphone problems

Snap bought the app because of RunGoodInc's contributions to this thread. Thanks for the discount, I'm sure it will be well worth it.

Functionality that RunGood lacks:

-Basic stats such as average BI, average losses, average number of re-buys, and standard deviation.

-Reports, a great thing about Poker Journal is its ability to run some basic reports, such as a breakdown of venues, starting time, days of weeks.

-Ability to save filters, another great feature in PJ is that I can have multiple filters that are set to specific data. For example, I may want to be able to track profit/loss for every month or every 2 weeks, PJ can accomplish that quite easily.

I was comparing apple to apple, RunGood to Poker Journal.

It's just hard for me to justify an interface redesign because of it at this point. Still, I've been toying with the idea of maybe a gesture-based shortcut (two-finger tap on the timer screen?) for quickly adding tokes since your initial post. I hate adding half-baked features just to "tick off a checklist" so I want to give some more thought on how this change would affect the app and all users before I implement it though.
I didn't think you dismissed it lightly - not at all. I realize I represent a very tiny % of people that track tips, and I appreciate your clarification on the reasons why you didn't include it and agree with those reasons for the most part.

BUT

A gesture-based toke method would be way, way better than a toke button, so long as it's easy to see a toke was inputted (flash on screen or something). That's a pretty ideal method when you think about it; what could be faster than a swipe or double finger tap when your next hand is being dealt?

Indeed. I just meant when you have filters set to on and start toying with turning a bunch of fields on and off, you might forget when you have nothing currently selected. It's definitely a "meh, whatever" issue, though.

If it can't fit between location and date as is, then I'd be fine with having one less session (or smaller font) at a glance before having to scroll, but I understand why you wouldn't want to do that. I also agree that the color scheme, fonts and buttons used in your app make it far easier to read and more intuitive than any other app I've looked at.

Thanks again for taking the time to clarify the implementation of your designs. Even though I'm not yet using it, I'll be recommending your app.

Re: Poker Journal App on iOS8 for iphone problems

I got over two years of data with poker journal and ever since ios8 it doesn't work. I backed up data fairly often so I'm not worried about getting them back should poker journal start working with an upcoming iOS update. Do you guys expect poker journal to start working with apple soon? Or should I just get a new app and start anew? It would be nice to have all my data back, I'm holding out for when it works. I'm jus logging my sessions myself on notepad for now but I miss looking at the graph lol

Re: Poker Journal App on iOS8 for iphone problems

I have an app called Poker Mate that I have been working on in my free time the past few years. It probably doesn’t have the number of features or design as some of the others, but it’s free to try with no limit on sessions. Check it out if you’re looking to switch up your app. I’m almost done with an update to make it universal for iPad, then I’m going to continue working on adding graphs. I’d welcome any feedback as well.

Re: Poker Journal App on iOS8 for iphone problems

Finally got the Poker Journal SQLite converter finished.

http://convertpokerjournal.com

Upload your .sqlite file from your PJ iTunes backup and it will give you the same formatted .CSV that PJ would have given you as a backup.

The site is barebones and done quick and dirty. So there's not a lot of error handling and I didn't get a chance to write any tests. I'll probably add all that later.

It does work though. You can import the .CSV into any app that says they'll import PJ backups. I tested it on RunGood and all my games imported fine.

I'll probably be adding some walk throughs and an FAQ later.

Post in here or PM me if you have any problems

Great stuff! Thanks. Donated.

Edit: One issue, unless there's a way around it that I'm missing. The dates come in as text and don't seem to be interpreted as dates. Which means when I sort them, it's in "alphabetical" order. 1/1/09 is my first date, followed by 1/1/10, etc., so all the January dates are first, regardless of year, then the October dates (10/...). Thoughts?

Thanks for the donation!

The format from PJ are string dates so that's why it converts that way.

I assume you're opening it in Excel? There may be a formula for converting string time stamps. or maybe an import option.

Another option would be to import that cvs back into SQLite Manager and set your datestart and dateend fields to integer.

When I first imported it myself per your earlier direction, they were integers in seconds since 12AM on 1/1/1970, so that's easy to convert. I'll just copy those over to this one. Your website's approach integrates all the other stuff nicely, so I want to keep the rest of its output.

That's fair. I was commenting on apps in general, including other tracking apps.

I did zero research – because my reasons for making RunGood aren't primarily financial – but, as a player, I downloaded every tracking app on the App Store looking for one to use. I decided to make RunGood when I couldn't find a single tracking app that I liked using. Having an app for my own personal use was motive enough for me to start building it.

I realize I probably won't make much money out of it, and that's fine. I'm a poker player first, and a developer second (which I believe is an advantage for RunGood). I'm content to have an app that suits my needs, and I'm happy that the community seems to really like it, including many pros that I looked up to when starting out in poker (Daniel Negreanu, Joe Hachem, Prahlad Friedman among the ones that I know of).

Quote:
What does RunGood offer that Poker Journal doesn't?
To name a few...

- Readability + intuitive interface
This might not be a "feature" in the traditional sense, but it's very important to many users, especially iOS users.

- Currency support
RunGood supports multiple currencies and gets the latest exchange rates online. It's all done seamlessly in the background, and very convenient if you travel to play.

- Meaningful graphs
Poker Journal graphs provide little to no information, because the axes do not have standard increments. This makes it hard to precisely estimate the value of each data point. Once you have a profit of 5-figures, the numbers also start overlapping onto the graph.

RunGood graphs have axes with standard increments, and you don't need to estimate at all – simply tap on a session and view its details. Your exact total profit at the time, along with the session date, game, and other info are shown below.

- Tags
RunGood was the first tracking app to implement tags (some other apps might have also added them now). Tags make the app immensely flexible, because players can use them according to their own needs.

Some users stake players and tag sessions with the player name. Some use tags to rate their own play or mark sessions with "high rake", "soft table", etc. You can filter using tags, and the stats and graphs will update accordingly.

- Goals
Set poker goals you'd like to reach and track your progress.

- Compatibility with the latest versions of iOS
RunGood has had smooth transitions to both iOS 7 and 8. I also try to keep RunGood backward compatible with older versions of iOS, even if it's sometimes a bit more work.

I don't want to sound like I'm bashing Poker Journal, but the first sentence of the app description reads: "WARNING: Poker Journal is not comparable with iOS 8." There are also numerous other typos in the description and within the app itself that have never been corrected for years. I like products that are well-crafted, and this seems really sloppy to me. When I tried using the app, it made me wonder about the quality of behind-the-scenes details that I couldn't see.

However, I think it's totally fine for some players to prefer Poker Journal or disagree with some of the implementations in RunGood. In the end, having different apps to choose from is good for the community, and you being a fan of one takes nothing away from my use of another. I'm just trying to build a tracking app according to my own vision of how a tracking app should be made – for myself, and for those who share that vision.

Have you tried poker analytics at the time ? When did you start the development exactly?

You can import the sessions with correct timestamps.

The region and date formats on your device need to be the same as the settings were when the sessions were exported using Poker Journal.

Otherwise, go to Settings > General > International > Region Format, set it to "United States", and set the time on your device to 12-hour format (instead of 24-hour), then try to import your sessions again. You can change the settings back after successfully importing the sessions.

I'm kind of speechless that the timer looks like 0h00 and that's all you get. Once a minute has passed, then you get 0h01. No flashing, nothing. You have to look at the bottom of the screen and see if it has the pause or play icon to know if your session is recording or on pause then you'll have to recall "does that icon mean it's paused or if I hit it it will pause?" during a long session. Standard deviation, is that per hour, per session, what?

It's also the least intuitive app I've seen. I can rip apart an app in 10 minutes, and this one takes 5 minutes just to understand what the developer had in mind with something. Like you add a game, say Badacey, but you must give an acronym for it or it won't save. You load the game and the acronym is nowhere to be found in the game selection or play screen. Ok, must be for something somewhere, but I was like, Tap, Hold, X.

If you have an itunes backup of PJ you can get the .sqlite database and use the site I created to convert it to .csv.

I post earlier in this thread about how to get your .sqlite database if you have trouble doing that.

convertpokerjournal.com

I've imported 3 different people's database files into RunGood and everything imports fine.

Hello-

I am also a frustrated Poker Journal user. I received the same email from the developer and I also have emailed Apple and started a thread in their forums about this issue. I'd simply prefer for PJ to work again.

Well I ditched Poker Journal for good! Too frustrated with it!

Also what will happen when IOS 9 gets released? I do not want to deal with that.

I got RunGood and so far I like it!

I just hope they constantly update it and improve it.

I also hope there is no issues with IOS updates in the future!

I've imported 3 different ppls database files into RunGood for testing and probably went through the process 20+ times, everything imported in fine.

All 3 databases I used had data going back to at least 2011 and had between 700-1200 sessions (cash games and tournaments).

All the data was converted from the .sqlite file from iTunes backups to .CSV using the site I made

There's a free version called RunGood Lite you can try if you'd like to take a look at the stats. We organize them in a way that provides better readability and conveys information more efficiently than reports (in our opinion). We are working on an update to add standard deviation stats and others, but there are already quite a few stats available in the current version.
