Desktop or laptop to run solvers ( mainly GTO+) Desktop or laptop to run solvers ( mainly GTO+)

I recently started studying solvers and GTO.
I bought GTO+ but it runs sluggish on my Dell XPS i7 8GB RAM, ram laptop. I also have ACER laptop i5 16GB RAM.

Anybody runs GTO+( or other solvers ) on laptops( if so - what specs) or you all have specialized desktops.

I love GTO+ and play against the solution option but then I load the solved solution( I received some from other players) it runs slowly on my laptop. I was under impression that solved solutions would run easy but I guess when you play against it - it recalculates decisions as we go thus good PC is needed.

I had a trial of Simple GTO Trainer with training packs - it worked good.

I mainly interested in playing/practicing against the solutions - any other options( I have Pokersnowie but it is not a true GTO bot).

I would love to stick with laptop but i9 processor and 32GB RAM would be at least 3000$ and desktop would be around 2000$.

HP Z420 PTC Creo Workstation E5-1620v2 4 Cores 8 Threads 3.7Ghz 64GB 256GB SSD - I could get it for 400$ refurbished - would it be enough to run it faster or i need newest processors.

I'm desperately in need of an upgrade. I'm on an 8GB RAM 7 year old laptop lol. It does run GTO+ quite well, though. I'm looking to upgrade to a new laptop within the next 3-6 months, tops. Looking to spend $500-$1000 tops, as well. It would be for mainly poker, social media, web browsing, and light usage otherwise.

older refurbished workstations are great value
depending where you live, you prob can get a dual 6 core xeon dell or hp for ~300$ that performs almost as well as a 1st gen Ryzen 7 desktop cpu
only problem is that they're massive and weigh 20kg+
pm if you need help

Is this the most intensive program and have you tried running it on the ACER laptop with more RAM?

I just built a computer for the 1st time and would highly recommend it - I'll never be buying a prebuilt PC again. It obviously takes more time but I learned a lot of cool stuff doing it - not to mention got a beastly machine with overkill on all components so it breezes through everything.

I got the Ryzen 3700x CPU for 300(+100 for motherboard in bundle deal), 32 GB Ram for 150, 1 TB SSD for 120 and I splurged for my graphics card(2070 Super for 500) because I wanted to stay with my theme of overkill and never worry about issues during streaming or games - you almost certainly won't need this(I probably don't) and can get the GPU for ~100.

I also needed a case, power supply, and the actual Windows OS but finished everything for ~1500. I got to customize and use better components than most prebuilt computers and couldn't be happier with the final build - if you did this I think you could accomplish your goals for significantly less.

If you're in the market for a new machine you'll basically have to pick two of the three
1. Convenience of laptop
2. Running programs easily
3. Reasonable price

either way, if you guys plan to build a new desktop pc but don't want the hassle, check with the retailer if they offer assembly services, you might be surprised. Where I live, you can get full assembly of your components if you buy all parts from the same shop, either for free or a small fee, sub 50$.

Best bang for your buck for a solver pc right now are as follow:

1)refurbished workstation with dual cpus
for example 2 x X5650/5660 xeon performs as well as a Ryzen 7 1st gen for half the price. they usually come with 16gb+ ram so no worries there. There are higher end options, still v good value. Can run Windows 10, no problem. I advise against trying to build one yourself, as you will run into a host of problems matching components. If you have access to a recycling center that deal with pcs, that's a good bet to find a good deal.

2)Ryzen 7 or 9 pc, 16 or 32 gb ram, pick a decent motherboard, cheap gpu, if you have or plan to get a 4k monitor/tv that doesn't have a display port, get a gpu with hdmi 2.0, cheapest ones are gt 1030 from nvidia and rx 550 from amd. your monitor/tv has to support hdmi 2.0 as well, but most newer ones do.

3)laptop with a non low powered chip (these only maintain advertised boost clocks for a limited time). if the cpu ends with H or HQ it's fine, if it's a U series look to skip.

check and compare cpu performance on youtube by typing the chip name and cinebench score
that's a good test for real world solver use
cinebench R15 yields different results to R20 so only compare scores on the same version

I used to run a small pc shop and know a thing or 2 about computers, if anybody needs help, post here and I'l try to help.

16gb+ to do postflop
32 is a bit overkill but you will run into wide ranges or deep stacked spots that need 20-24gb for multiple bet sizes

64+ for preflop/3way

R9 is faster than R7 and overall better bang/$ once you add all the other components but it depends how much money you want to spend

R7 is "fast enough" imo, but depends how much time you spend with solvers. if that pc is going to be on 16h a day running sims, the better cpu is justified

This is just "in general" but i think most laptops can run GTO+ just fine. Might need a desktop (or server) for PIO or SPF though
