Anyway, I maintain my DB from time to time. Open postgreadmin, select your database, right click and choose "maintainence", select "Full" and let it go.
HM's HUD and TableNinja's frames are the most likely causes. Disabling the TN Frames and tuning up HM and the HUD could help.
If you use multi-panel HUD, switch to a single panel and turn off any transparency in the HUD backgrounds or stats.
Regarding database maintenance:
I suggest you vacuum once a week and defrag once a month.
You should regularly purge mined hands in your database, after purge vacuum / full analyze the database via pgadmin.

Then you can full/vacuum/analyze -

Before you defragment you should stop the PostgreSQL service:
Start > Programs > PostgreSQL 8.x > Stop Server
Use your favorite defrag tool. I recommend Smart Defrag.
After defrag I recommend you reboot your PC. If you need to access the DB before rebooting you can start the PostgreSQL service.
Start > Programs > PostgreSQL 8.x > Start Server
