How do you check a program for virus?

I was wondering how do you go about analyzing a program to make sure it doesn't have anything fishy on it. I assume since you give permission to it, virus software wont pick it up? I have no idea other than to tell anti virus to scan it.

The software in question is http://sharkystrator.com/

A poster on here created it and is promoting it in internet poker > commercial software section.

Try uploading it to here: https://www.virustotal.com/

That won't tell you if it's got some novel malware in though so you still need to be careful.
