I'd like to record some of my sessions, and my free trial has run out for Camtasia.

I've tried Camstudio but it seems to be very buggy. I have multiple monitors so I need a program that can only record one monitor if possible.

Any positive experiences with other softwares that are free/inexpensive?

Does the job for me for free, and you select what to record + mic and speakers if needed:

ive used CamStuido with good results for video, once i finally got it set up properly. for audio, sometimes its good sometimes not.

this blog has a bunch of good tutorials for CamStudio:
http://screencasttutorial.org/

specifically this post on using XVID to record video:
http://screencasttutorial.org/53/jaw...-tutorials-453
one hint for XVID is that you need to use a recording box where both dimensions are divisible by 4, so if you try odd numbers it won't work.

finally
if i just need record something quick:

I spent ages trying different software and loads of them were buggy and hassel and ended up buying a subscription to screencastomatic.

It is very good and always works.

There is also : http://www.fraps.com/

which is more for video games. It seems to be smoother with video gameplay and costs €30

BB Flashback - free but have to register. Simple to use. I also have multi-monitors - can choose to record only a specific window or choose the record area - or simply record all.

I like Snagit by TechSmith that uses the Jing video recording engine. Worth every penny imo. I pay for the extra screencast storage since I use it so much for work.

IF you're willing to spend money Bandicam is only $30 and is WAY lighter on the cpu useage than anything else I've tried. Also does have that annoying thing (bug?) where camstudio (or maybe it was camtasia I forget) demands that you set a proper sized record area or complains about it not being right dimensions =p

I used CamStudio and it worked for me.

Now I need to know a program that will edit out screen-names. It could either crop or blur them. Anyone know one of those?

I've currently use "FastoneCapture" http://www.faststone.org/FSCaptureDetail.htm and haven't had any problems with it. I've never seen anyone else mention it. Anybody else use it?

Try My Screen Recorder Pro screencasting software. It has most of the advanced features of Camtasia at a much lower cost. There is also a lite version for a low price. I use the Pro version because it directly records in MP4 file format.

Can you record a screen share and skype conversation with any of the software listed? I want to be able to record my next coaching session so I can maximize the instruction presented to me.

Thank you

Just posting to say I think this is the best option around now and it's free! Can used both to record a file on your computer or to stream sessions to twitch etc

If you are using a Mac I think QuickTime (which is built in) will work.

I also work with two monitors. Camtasia lags a lot on my laptop, too. Is it because it's "too large" for my "weak" machine to handle? If so, I should use a lightweight screen recorder? I come across some free ones like Game bar, CamStudio and OBS, eh, not so flexible or easy to handle. Currently, I'm using RecMaster gained from a giveaway site... Easy enough for newbie like me and it supports record two monitors at the same time.
