4-color decks, unlogical colors? 4-color decks, unlogical colors?

I'm not really sure where else to post this. I think this is the most appropriate place, but sorry if it isn't. I've had this question on my mind since I started using a 4-color deck about a year ago.

I was just wondering why the 4-color decks use green for clubs. It would feel more natural to me to use yellow instead of green, as there's a higher contrast between yellow/red/blue than green/red/blue. There are also 4-color decks that use yellow for spades. Why not leave spades black, like hearts remain red, and make clubs yellow?

Also, the most common form of color blindness is red-green blindness. Yellow-red or yellow-blue is much rarer.

Am I the only one finding the standard for 4-color decks strange? And (though not the point of this post) if I've been living under a rock and a ton of red/yellow/blue/black cardmods are out there, can anyone link me?

Clubs symbolize Clover.
Clover (Trifolium, or trefoil) is a plants in the pea family Fabaceae.
Plants are green.

Therefore why not make a club actualy green.

Thank you for asking the question.

I have one customer who had requested color blind decks last year, and I had made him one or 2 decks designed with his color preferences. I recently recreated one of my old decks, and he asked me to make a color-blind version for him, so I came up with this system, for my grey spade installers.

Typically a 4-color deck for stars looks the same whether in 4-color mode or not. My decks already have an option during installation for Lowball Text, and Grey/Yellow spades. I modified the 2 extra faces on the grey spade version, that are used when you enable 4-color deck, and changed the green club to yellow. So this deck can be installed with grey or yellow spades, lowball or standard text, and if installed with grey spades, and turned to 4-color mode, you get an enhanced 'vision' mode. It wouldn't be very hard to integrate this option with other decks I made, but so far it's a 'as-requested' option, that I haven't begun adding to all my new decks.

Complete description and screen shots.

-Here are the grey and yellow spade examples (and a oversized XX preview).

-Here is the 'Vision' version.

Ah yes those things makes sense! My mind is at peace now Thanks

And fozzy, that vision deck looks really sweet. Do you have something like that for iPoker? I already have iBolide so all I need is the image file.

No, I have never made a mod for iPoker, and don't have any immediate plans to start. Many of my decks have been ported by other people, but never a color-blind version. I am sure anyone modding iPoker could make the 5th/6th rows of the deck image, which is normally for 4 color deck mode, into 'color-blind' mode quite easily.

I am not colour blind, but I think red/blue/yellow/black looks very pretty, and I'd probably use that myself given the option

I'm sure I've seen colour blind people posting complaints about red/green 4 colour decks with no symbols in coaching vids... can't quickly find links to them tho...

It's very easy to mod FTP or Stars that way, when making 4-color decks. Not difficult at all, once you have a properly layered deck PSD file, to change around the row orders a bit. This is basically what is done to create the cardsmall.png for ftp decks. I guess I should update my recent Modeus deck with that option.
