Hi all,

I am debating about playing the 1500$ O8 event this year (early June in the Rio). What kind of resource can I use to improve my game?

Specifically looking for this:
-early/mid tournament: calling range, opening range, 3bet range
-late tournament: opening range, 3bet range

Any advice for 1timers O8 tournament players? (aside starting hands rankings)

Cheers,

If you lack actual play time experience no advise is going to help you enough to advance to late stages of the tournament.
I'm sure someone will chime in with some pointers.

I would recommend venetian deepstacks if it works with your schedule, it had quite a nice structure last i looked.

Should also be a little friendlier to players with less tourney experience.

Play more hands early in the tournament and tighten up as the blinds get higher.

I assume that is what most players do. They feel they have tons of big bets early tournament so they are pretty loose and limp/call with marginal hands that are going to make them do compounded mistakes.
When it comes to tightening up during later stages, I assume it is what most people are doing. So at this point it becomes profitable to open more hands, especially in position. (I said open, not limp).
Typically I would fold KK36 double suited from the HJ early tournament, but I would probably open it at later stages. My assumption is that I would steal the blinds way more when people play tight than early tournament when people will call me with a junky A568.

Thoughts? I am pretty new to this game so I may be totally wrong!

You're going to be playing with a LOT of competent players that will wise up to exactly what you're doing. As one of the other replies said, run good and you'll have nothing to worry about!

Anyone have any info on other special O8 tourneys that would be occurring close to the WSOP $1500 on May 30, 2019?

Not talking about the Orleans or other regular weeklies, but things like the Venetian DSE or Aria Summer series which have had nice $400-600 entry tournaments within a few days either way of the WSOP $1500 in years past.

I would like to maximize my experience for flying out there.

Those other schedules should start showing up in March most likely.

It's guesswork at this point. Venetian said they probably won't have schedule until April, so that could create some chaos. Based on last couple years, I would guess there would be at least two MTTs in $250-600 range before (on 5/28 and/or 5/29... possibly 5/27), and probably at least one right during/after (on 6/2 and/or 6/3).

Cheers,

I plan on playing this one, and it will be my first split pot tournament. My thought is that it could be the softest non-holdem tourney at the series so why not try this one. Last year it got like 900 entries and this year it's going to be early in the series when everyone still has high hopes for a bracelet.

Because of where I live finding fixed limit o8 games is pretty much impossible. What I've been doing is playing plo8 and nlo8 where I can online. A few sites offer daily tournaments for these variants. I'm also debating on playing limit hold'em cash when I can make it out to casinos. It couldn't hurt to get some fixed limit hands in of any sort, especially in a live setting.

Ultimately I think run good is the best advice though

Pretty much agree. I have been reading hands on forums too but there are not that many about LO8. See you there probably - The only reason I wouldn't play the 1500$ O8 is if I decide to fire everyday on the big50 until I qualify to Day2/3.

This single best piece of advice is to just put in volume and gain experience.
Play more O8 for better understanding the various concepts specific to it. Experience and familiarise yourself with more spots that you haven't encountered before, and repeat.
Play more tournaments, for better understanding concepts specific to them and things such as late-game play and how to apply/execute those things.

As well as reading through past threads on here is a good resource.

Every year, SpaceyFCB (former November 9er, Kenny Hallaert) posts a spreadsheet with all of the schedules in one place. Once some more schedules get added, he will have a list of all non-NLHE tournaments listed in order by date and game type on a separate sheet.

How many hands can you expect to play per hour in a split pot game with the average WSOP dealer?

I usually play the 20/40 with a half kill at the Rio during the WSOP, and we are lucky to get 7 hands per down.

5/25 Ven 400
5/27+ Ven 600
5/28 GN 250
6/3 Aria 470
6/5 GN 250

Should be small event from Binions and/or Orleans also.

Venetian is really favoring PLO8 over FLO8 this year.

Interesting. I tend to do almost the exact opposite with excellent results over many years.

What's cool is that there seem to be a few mixed, plo/plo8 events. I expect the field in these to be super soft. Anyone else share my sentiment?

From my experience the percentage of the field that has no clue what they're doing in Omaha events is greater than the percentage of the same in Hold'em events.

And specifically to your point, it seems even fewer can play both Hi and Hi-Lo Omaha well.

Oh, which events?

I haven't had a chance to look at any detailed schedules yet.

New question about O8 tournament strategy. Can someone give some recommendation on play style depending of the number of big bets left? Like for NLH, your play varies a lot if you have 20bb, 50bb or 100bb. How about O8?

Another question about this 1500$ tournament. What % of players do you think will be left by the end of day 1? We start with 10K, play 10 levels. The big bet on the last level is 1000.
