Hello plo8 community so this is the first thing i have ever posted on the internet and it feels dirty and exciting at the same time So it is what it is ive been playing poker for 7 years now and have been a losing player that whole time. I have studied a lot of poker reading a lot of books on holdem and even thou i am a lifetime losing player i actually think i have a really good understanding of the game.

when i took down a tourney i would jump in cash straight away even if i had work in like 4 hours lol i used to just always want to play but now that has gone and i want to make money.

I am saving a bankroll so that i can try and grind a monthly wage while living in south america. i will have enough money to live without cashing out for about 4 months. ive been playing plo8 and nlo8 for about a year and have been getting much better results than in holdem (even thou my bankroll management has been the exact same)

i will be playing mtt's micros and lows and would really appreciate if anyone could recommend any up to date books or online tools for studying plo8 or nlo8 or just general advice for my challenge in november

My advice is that a losing player shouldn't try to go pro.

I don't know anything about PLO8 so I can't offer any advice on that.

Hard work and dedication could be tried while you have another job and are not trying to live on poker winnings. If you then become a winning player you could consider going pro.

ok sorry i maybe should of explained a bit more i am not trying to live off poker winnings from the start. I am saving enough money to live in south america for around 6 months without any profit from poker. i have done a bit of research and have found out that $1000 a month is more than enough for a wage and i have 5-6 months grinding/ studying working really hard towards my dream before i have to withdraw .....................................and if it doesn't work then i just go back home and get a job

I didn't move your post, but you just said you were a newbie, and this thread says it is for newbies.

Welcome to the forum. It's not an insult to have a thread moved. When you are new to a forum, you should kick around through it a little bit before posting. You may find that a lot of questions you might ask already have been asked and answer, or information you're seeking already is available. And read the forum "FAQ" to get a feel for what goes and what doesn't.

We get a lot of threads started by new players asking the same questions over and over. We were concerned that we'd lose the interest of experienced players if the same questions and threads came up repeatedly, so we made one "newb" thread as a repository. Questions such as "what books should I read" or "what online tools should I use" are such questions.

Hi, Do you play on pokerstars?
Best tool is http://www.propkertools.com/simulations?g=o8o
Best book IMO still Pot Limit Omaha 8 Revealed by Dan Deppen
How many tables you could play with your best or good game?
One of th best (say inside 10 best) Russian PLO8-NLO8 MTT players has ROI like 18% (without series like SCOOP/WCOOP). Would it be enough for you?

TBQH if you can afford to take time off to play poker and have a plan for getting good enough to win by the end of the four months, I don't see any reason to work a day job during that time.

Now, chillrob's advice is good for most people because most people DRASTICALLY overrate their skills, leave a day job, and then find out their results aren't that great (usually attributed to bad luck because LOL Dunning Kruger). I've even done this despite taking pride in my self-awareness. So now they're without a job and without a plan. No pair no draw.

HOWEVER you need some accountability mechanism to make sure you're not fooling yourself. Best way: Hire a coach. Or at least, 1-2 months into your adventure, unless you can explain exactly why you're crushing the games, hire a coach. You probably have way more leaks than you realize.

hey foldandforget thanks for taking the time to message back, yes i play on pokerstars but do not have a poker tracker yet so i dont know how to go about studying ( adjusting hand ranges to players tendencies etc) 18% roi would do i am willing to put in alot of volume as i already put in alot of hours at a job i hate so i would rather play more hours online poker even for less money i would working a job i hate if that makes sense. I can play 4 tables comfortably and could probably push 6 but anymore and its too fast just now lol

are you making a living from poker ??? and what games do you play, agien much appreciated for the reply

thanks for the input and reply aqkj10 every message is much appreciated. I certainly do not over estimate my skill but my itm on pokerrankings has increased from 12% playing no limit holdem to 17% playing plo hi lo nl hi lo.

i have always wanted coaching but think that the prices are very expensive. A lot of coaches are like $100 an hour and i am going to be playing with a bankroll of around $3,000 so 10 hours is a third of my roll.

Well, you don't need that much coaching to insure you're avoiding egregious leaks. If you can take 4 months off without worrying about living expenses, I'd think you could afford $200 for 2 hours of coaching, but you know best.

You can skip the coaching if (1) your results for the first 1-2 months are good (2) and you know why they're good, i.e. you can identify your opponents' clear mistakes.

plo8123, Hi

I am a recreational player, playing mostly MTT HORSE and separate games from HORSE, also PLO8. Despite rec I am very sure in my advises about tool and book.

When someone has been losing for 7 years straight and says he has a really good understanding of the game, something is not right. Either your self reflection is distorted or you don't know what "really good understanding" can mean. For example, there can be aspects of the game you don't even know existed, let alone be good at it.

Step 1: realize how much you suck
Step 2: realize how much everyone else sucks
Step 3: try to improve and take advantage of the mistakes other players make

i actually dont know best thats why i started posting in a poker forum :P im glad for the advice i always thought that with coaching you wouldneed to have a few hours to get a lot of knowledge for improving but if you think even 2 hours would help improve my game i would be willing to get 2-3 hours

how does coaching work thou ????

thanks for taking the time to reply amok ive seen you comment on a lot of stuff ive been reading in this forum :P you are right i dont really know what a good understanding of the game is but all i meant by that was that i am a thinking player and even thou im a fish i can see a difference in my game to a lot of other fish.

also i only switched to plo8 a bit less than a year i think and i have had much better results since then.

a quick question please- how big is the difference between play and which is harder in plo8 cash and tounreys ???

I think the biggest difference is depth. In cash you will be usually playing at least 50bb deep while in tournaments you get very shallow. Many tournament players have a pretty weak understanding of poker concepts, but the edge in cash games is very stable if you have one.

AFAIK rake is a big difference, if you asked about Pokerstars. In cash they take it from every pot, besides finished preflop. So in HU split pots you win minimum, but if it's a big pot - pay huge rake. So now, after PS practically eliminates rake back, PLO8 cash is close to death in midstakes.

PS - please don't forget, I am rec, so it's just a quote from some pro blogs.

Rake is smaller in PLO8 than in PLO (at least for me). If your win rate is high enough, rake is easily beatable.
