for a second I thought thang luu wrote an O8 book.
you meant the book by mark tenner and lou krieger.
I believe it's supposed to be a beginner's book... didn't read it...

There has come out a new edition. I stopped reading the first edition after seeing serious flaws (they stated it matters what you already have put in the pot). Maybe they have corrected it. Probably I'll buy it to check out. The book has positive qualities too.

I've never found any Kreiger books to be remotely worthwhile as they all contain obvious errors, so I'd be surprised if this new edition changed anything. I remember the first time I read one of his books, probably close to 15 years ago, I was still pretty new to gambling but even I was able to pick up on some obvious conceptual errors.

Hey guys, I found this book really helpful for consolidating my hand ranges, and general strategy.

Omaha Hi LO for Low Limit Players

Bill Boston

Has an entire list of all the omaha hi lo hands and their equity, etc.

Could you elaborate how this book is helpful compared to other books?

I got this book before, but it has just pages after pages of tables. As I remembered it, it could be only some look-up data chart, but no actual strategy whatsoever. Maybe I missed something back then.

The tables I found were the most useful from the book. For an experienced hilo player, the tables might not be as important because they already know the relative value of every hand they play. However, for a player new to the game the tables are great. One time I played a session with the chart right in front of me and it helped me balance my range a lot. Otherwise, yes strategy is a little patchy, but there are a few things that I learned from that portion as well. You might want to investigate further into the tables and charts, they're really great tools.

ryanh13,

Thanks for the clarification. When I tried to learn PLO8 (still trying), I read this book, read this forum, and googled some. I agree that it has its own usefulness, but it seems to me quite limited.

The charts could have been really a must if we don't have internet or personal computers, I guess.

As a PLO8 player, I don't care that much about hand rankings pre-flop. If you have A-10-Q-K single-suited in late position, you could call pot-size open from a nut peddling player in early position when one or more players called or even raised. However, if I have A-2-7-T unsuited, I would fold in the same situation.

However, if I'm playing limit games, the charts would provide more meaning to my game.

The Art of War by Sun Tzu

On War, Carl von Clausewitz

The Book of 5 Rings, Myamoto Musashi

Zen and the Art of Poker, Larry Phillips

Exactly. Its great for limit games. For mtt's, i employ a LAG strategy that differs from the book.

About the new edition of Tenner-Krieger. Have got it, looks good. But as usual, I spend way too little time with books, just glancing now and then

believe it or not, Russ Georgiev once wrote a really good strat article on PLO8, you'll have to search for it on the old RGP

Bump.

Threads older than February 1 are to be automatically archived next month in preparation for an upgrade. I'm bumping all 2+2 threads cited in our two stickies that are not already archived so that they will not be lost to us.

This includes all the wells.

I have the original book, is there enough new stuff in the latest book to spend more bucks? Any stuff here on Pot Limit?
I've yet to see a copy of this, or any reviews. :-\

Other than TJ Cloutier's book, what others are worth a read? I know I have a ton to learn but I enjoy the challenge of this game more than NLHE.
Two books I would recommend are "Mastering Omaha Poker" by Mark Tenner and Lou Krieger, "Pot-Limit Omaha Poker, The Big Play Strategy" by Jeff Hwang.
The second book has sections on PLO. PLO8 and FLO8.

All the best.

Tenners book tilted the **** out of me such that I couldn't really get into the meat and potatoes of the strat. Ymmv. Hwang is PLO high for all but a short section - there's better for PLO8. For limit, I've heard good things about Ray Zee's book but haven't read it.

Actually Jeff Hwang's book covers LO8 for 138 of 320 pages so it is hardly a "short" section.

You said before that you had problems with Tenner's book! Like to tell us why?

Meh, probably more me than him. I found the first 7 chapters or so to be full of basic to the point of being insulting for anyone even remotely familiar with poker that it just turned me off. If his intent was to start from scratch then that's fine. I guess I just think it rare that anyone would come to O8 as their first game and not be familiar with the stuff he covered. Ymmv.

Went back and found my tweet about when I was tilted from it:

You put out a poker book in 2011 and feel the need to include hand rankings and wisdom nuggets like "Pros refer to bad players as fish." #ORLY

As I said, I can't comment on the strat because I didn't get that far. And yes, I could have skipped all the BS, but that's just not how I roll with books. /OCD
