I think it depends pretty heavily on how often vil is continuing aggression through bad flops and turns. Any time you can get him to put in 2 big bets bad ott it's gonna be worth 4 preflop, also there's going to be a decent number of spots you'll want to iso things like 2 pair or nut low plus one pair ott... all of these things lead toward being IP. Also, not sure I'm understanding the 4 players down idea, if OOP you want to be directly to his right. I can't think of many situations where maximum advantage does come from exactly, check, fish acts, everyone else acts, we act again.
Honestly it's just a good spot either way as long as you're conscious of some savvy ways to let up and then push again on the gas. if opponent isnt following through on turns I'd shift heavily to getting IP, pretty disastrous in any event to risk missing big bets.
