I recently bought my first poker book 'The Mammoth Book Of Poker' by Paul Mendelson. Since reading this I would like to study the game some more.

Does anyone have any recommendations.

Thankyou I'v decided to purchase Small Stakes Hold 'em: Winning Big with Expert Play.

Ed Miller's books are great, BUT I think Small Stakes Hold 'em: Winning Big with Expert Play is a LIMIT Hold'em Book.

No Limit, Theory and Practice
Small Stakes NLHE
Professional NLHE
How to Read Hands
Playing the Player
(titles approximate)

Are all focused on No Limit cash games, and are applicable to the levels of games you're likely to find in a casino.

I'm a winning player. Averaging $17 per hour this year playing 1/2, 1/3, 2/5 NLHE mixed in with some 1/2/5 PLO and small buy in tourneys. I'm by no means great or a professional, but I consider myself a decent player that recognizes what games I have an edge. Good luck and may you always run good.

It's a limit book but it's useful even for NL players.

I think OP should read Theory of Poker by Sklansky and Small Stakes Hold'em by Miller, Sklansky and Malmuth. They are not specifically NL books but if you understand all the concepts you will crush NL Hold'em.

True, true.
Theory of Poker was great.

I didn't mean to suggest that OP wouldn't get benefit from books focused on Limit, just to let him know ahead of time what he was buying.

I am a huge fan of SSHE. BUT.......
You can't seriously be recommending it to a NL player can you? There are a heap of good NL books out there so it is bizarre to instead recommend a book geared for limit play. Many of the concepts are not transferrable from limit to no limit - they are totally different games. Instead a book like No Limit Theory and Practice by the same authors would be far more beneficial.

For MTTs - Harrington's 3 books, Kill Everyone, Raiser's Edge.

OP: Some confusion here. App meant Small Stakes No-Limit Hold'em, a book recently released by Miller, along with Sunny Muhta and Matt Flynn. It's the one I'm reading right now, and i would definitely recommend it. Pick it up if you can.

Not sure why SSNLH gets so often recommended to relatively new players. It is not a bad book but it is quite a dangerous one if you are not sure what you're doing.

NLH: Theory and practice is as good for live games today as it was when it came out years ago. No recommendation for Online as I have not kept up with the recent(-ish) releases.

SSNLH gets recommendations because it's well written and has good ideas, so it sticks out in people's minds as "worth it", even if the concepts are a little more advanced.

I'd have to recommend reading, IN ORDER:
Theory of Poker
No Limit Hold'em, Theory and Practice
Professional NLHE, Vol1
Small Stakes NLHE (It's basically Prof. NLHE Vol2)
How to Read Hands
Playing the Player

Alright but you omitted a key part of my sentence: "recommended to relatively new players." Not exactly the kind of books I would recommend to a new player regardless of his other qualities.

I meant that people just remember it as being very good, and recommend it on that basis, without remembering that the concepts are potentially dangerous for a new player.

My favorite MTT book is Daniel Negreanu's Power Hold'em strategy. Gets your mind right for the middle levels and end-game spots in typical online MTT and the entire live MTTs..

Thats fantastic! If I could just be making steady profits I'd be more than happy. I enjoying playing the game win or lose but obviously earning steady profits makes things a little more exciting. What would you describe as your edge your knowledge of the game and how to play certain hands and spots?

Thankyou and good luck to yourself.

I'v always wanted to read poker books but I'v just never taken the game that seriously. I found it in Manchester Airport and thought it would be great to read whilst I was on holiday. It's definitely and beginners book and I learn't a lot about the Maths behind poker, whilst previously I was uneducated on.
