The Swedish lady's lawyer has indeed asked prosecutors to re-open the case.

Man who arguably got Trump elected despite campaign promises to devastate lives of the poor and downtrodden, arrested by Trump’s DOJ. Yeah, Assange and Glenn can fight this out amongst their new klan of right wing nut jobs.

But don’t despair yet, Glennwald and Keedwald, you are drawing very live to Trump declaring Assange’s arrest to be part of the Qanon deep state conspiracy and pardoning him. Very fun and interesting times you have given us!

The Guardian reports:

Quote:
The US justice department has confirmed that it issued an extradition request for Assange “in connection with a federal charge of conspiracy to commit computer intrusion for agreeing to break a password to a classified US government computer”.

In a statement, it cited court documents unsealed today that show the charge relates to “Assange’s alleged role in one of the largest compromises of classified information in the history of the United States”.

It claims Assange faces only five years in jail if convicted.
lol Assange if he's spent 7 years holed up in a bathroom to avoid facing charges for which 5 years is the penalty.

He isn't right that folks that are cheering Assange's arrest for releasing very newsworthy secret US government documents are national security state toadies? Are you cheering Assange's arrest? You don't agree with Greenwald and the Obama DOJ and the ACLU that this arrest is troubling for press freedoms?

I'd like to say I'm shocked that you are happy to see press freedoms eroded because it's happening to a guy you hate but it's not particularly surprising

There’s the rape charges too.

So wait, are you arguing that a news organization shouldn't have published the stolen DNC emails? That they weren't newsworthy? Are you joking?

Very very early days, but IF he really did assist in cracking a password to sensitive information and IF he really does get a 5 year maximum, then you know what? Fair enough. (Should be noted that I regard breaking into computer systems as an outsider as being a very different thing to being a whistleblower).

I'm cheering Assange's arrest because he worked in conjunction with Roger Stone and Russian intelligence to deliver our presidency to a fascist nightmare

HTH

So, freedom of the press, yes of course we need that. But only for Real Journalists. Who decides what a Real Journalist is? The Trump DOJ?

I suppose you understand and don't care that he isn't being arrested for any of that. So you're very happy that press freedoms are being eroded in a way that the Obama DOJ and the ACLU find very troubling, simply because it is happening to a guy you hate.

For rape charges of the kind Assange would be facing (the lowest level, because no violence was involved) the maximum penalty is 4 years. The average sentence for rape in Sweden is 26 months.

Yes, I am happy that the person that helped Trump get elected and has covered for his gross abuses of power all along the way is feeling the consequences of living under a right wing authoritarian regime. Hopefully this is a wake up call to you, and you will start treating Trump as a serious threat rather than a ****ing joke to rub in everyone else’s face.

Butnah, you are still going to focus all your energy on me for my feelings and continue stanning for the psychos who hold all the power.

Correct, just as I understand and don't care that Al Capone wasn't arrested for murder

Stop your ****ing gaslighting. They were strategically released, and Wikileaks made **** up to paint them in the worst possible light (i.e. ordering pizza means a weird, blood sex cult!)

I think the basic problem here is that the definition of "journalist" has become blurred to the point where it can be argued that a plainly partisan actor like Assange can be a journalist. Like yeah, if Sean Hannity can be a journalist, then clearly anything goes.

except...I'm the one who is opposing the authoritarian actions the Trump administration is taking here and you're the one supporting those actions? I guess this is one of the rare cases where opposing Trump is cheering on the tyrannical actions of the Trump DOJ. What exciting times we live in.

Seems dicey unless there is more. Perfectly media should just receive such documents. If he actively instructed and guided manning on how to get more documents, that is a huge problem for him. This preliminary report makes it sound like he just told Manning they should try to get more.

On that alone I don’t feel it rises to the level of a crime. If he provided more specific direction and guidance it does.
The wording sounds really weak to me. Like after receiving Mannings dump of data they likely just chatted about trying to break a password (that didn't happen) and through a metaphor to encourage Manning to keep looking. Assange may be a narcisstic douchebag, but that doesn't mean he should be thrown in jail under any US crimes.

I, too, have total faith in the US judicial system which locked up known completly innocent people for years and currently holds dozens without trial and whose co-conspirator was jailed, only released on commutation, and who is now back in jail.
