IANAL and all that, but the restrictions against extradition at least try to take into account the potential to then be re-extradited, I think. E.g. I remember it being raised in the original shenanigans that if he was extradited to Sweden who then tried to extradite him to the US, he would have recourse to UK courts (in addition to Swedish) about that extradition as well.

I have no idea how they prove that given that Manning isn’t talking, but the feds don’t bring charges unless they think they have a strong case. Was someone dumb enough to take notes on a criminal conspiracy? Were they texting each other about it?

GD DEMOCRATS HATE FREEDOM AND THE PRESS! THIS IS ALL THEIR FAULT! OBAMA! - Glenn Greenwald’s current thoughts on Assange being arrested.

According to the President of Ecuador, Great Britain gave a written assurance that Assange would not be extradited to any country where he might face torture or the death penalty, which presumably includes the US. But who knows. I certainly expect Assange to end up in the US somehow.

I have mixed feelings about this. I'm extremely opposed to laws which criminalize disclosure of information. OTOH, Assange did not endear himself to me by acting as a de facto agent of the Russian government in 2016. If I was dictator-for-life, I think my ideal outcome would be that he get some slap on the wrist jail term and a good behaviour bond.

Don’t have any information nor do I know the relevant laws but would it be the difference of just being handed the documents versus working with whomever on planning on how to take the documents.

I'm not sure exactly how the laws are written, but I don't think there is an issue if someone just hands you some classified documents. However if you had conspired with the person to get them, or if you know they are classified and then distribute them, then you are probably going to be in a world of hurt.

Yeah, picking sides between the american surveillence state and the russian ****posting troll state. That's why I'm rooting for plucky Sweden, plus you know the whole rape thing.

That would apply to anyone in the UK and is a well trodden road. As long as the US agrees not to impose the death penalty against the extraditee, it goes through.

Good riddance.

Glenn Greenwald's lawn mower appears to have reached so far into space it's about to appear on the photo of the black hole.

Greenwald is right though -- Democrats who cheer Assange being arrested for publishing extremely newsworthy secret government documents are bootlicking national security state toadies.

Bolded isn’t true: NYT published the Pentagon Papers and didn’t break the law.

Assange is only 47. In those embassy extraction videos he looks 67.

yeah man, the ACLU is the worst, right? Commie scum.

Not sure this is big news with all the bigger news today but Sudan's military has overthrown its government

Seems dicey unless there is more. Perfectly media should just receive such documents. If he actively instructed and guided manning on how to get more documents, that is a huge problem for him. This preliminary report makes it sound like he just told Manning they should try to get more.

On that alone I don’t feel it rises to the level of a crime. If he provided more specific direction and guidance it does.

I am shocked keedwald agrees with Greenwald.

So the DOJ is going after Assange for...... trying to crack a password

Yes, and, as we now know, it's conspiracy (with Manning) to commit computer intrusion by breaking the password, i.e. document theft. And it's five years max if convicted, and the idiot's locked himself up for seven years to avoid it. (Well, that and the rape case in Sweden.) I suppose he may fear that the US could bring more charges later.

Anyway, first he's got to go to Southwark Crown Court for sentence on the bail-jumping charge. District Judge Snow, convicting him, called him 'a narcissist who cannot see beyond his own selfish interest.'
