Is there any way for Sweden to prosecute the alleged rape(s)? They dropped the charges but the statute of limitations hasn't expired.

If I were him I'd be trying to hook myself up a life sentence in Sweden.

For real.

Swedish jail >> Ecuadorian closet >>>>>>>^50 US prison.

UK won't extradite him anywhere he might face the death penalty so US DOJ would have to take that off the table to get him at all. I doubt the US would pursue the death penalty anyway though.

That's Norway, as was Breivik. It's rare for people to serve super long sentences in Sweden but (again, as in Norway) it's possible to be imprisoned for life, but only because it is repeatedly determined that you are too dangerous to release.

They will get around that restriction imo. The UK could, for example, give him to Australia (I think he's still an Australian citizen as well as Ecuadorian) and Australia could give him to the US. Problem solved.

Greenwald reported last year that the Obama DOJ had considered indicting Assange and decided not to. The sealed indictment reportedly dates to December 2017. Trump probably greenlit it, or at least told them to do whatever they wanted.

Assange allegedly (tried to) helped Bradley/Chelsea Manning crack a password.

Yes, the prosecutor that closed the investigation said at the time that she could reopen it "if Mr Assange made himself available."

Boy, that seems like weak tea. They’d better have good evidence that there was more of a conspiracy beyond Manning handing Assange the docs or else I don’t see how this is different from NYT publishing the Pentagon Papers.

I'm not sure they need more than that.

So journalists should be prosecuted for receiving any classified information?

You can't become clinically anything if you never go outside. Unless you are stuck in a clinic for those seven years. Which would admittedly be pretty depressing.

Assange allegedly agreed to help Manning crack a password but was unsuccessful in doing so. Interested to hear expert's opinions on the chances of conviction and the expected sentence. IANAL but doesn't feel like a slam dunk 45 year sentence.

The US/UK extradition treaty is not complex. Apart from the death penalty there isn't much grounds for opposing. Very rare compassionate grounds which won't apply. Assange will probably appeal everything, but he will be held in custody while he does this, so he will just be increasing his jail time.

I guess there is close 0% that he will not be extradited anywhere and serve only UK changes?
