Who will run against Trump in 2020? Who will run against Trump in 2020?

I wonder if a guy like Ben Shapiro will come out to challenge trump . someone either never trumper or almost-never trumper on the right. a bill kristol / evan mcmullin type

Evan McMullin maybe. Hopefully he gets primaried if he makes it to 2020.

McMuffin is a 100% lock to run, and he might even win Utah this time.

Trump may not do so well in the primaries running against 1 or 2 people instead of 17, even as an idiotic incumbent.

Yea but the GOP is stupid. They'll trot out 20 people to run against Trump in the primaries. You know guys like Cruz, Carson, Rubio, and Christie are gonna run. It's gonna be 2016 all over again.

I think it will only be a couple of people but that Trump will get the nomination relatively easily.

He will have an enormous lead in fundraising and the early states (Iowa/NH/SC) all will support him very well. It's going to be very difficult for anyone to break through all of that.

I'd bet on that at even money as well. I just don't think it's a lock.

I would love it if trump got primaried and then couldn’t run because he was so disorganized he didn’t fill out the paperwork to run third party in time

I never said she would run.

And to fix the mess trump leaves, if he leaves a fixable mess, i think we need someone with experience so id rather not have her run.

Where is all the hype for Oprah running for president? I highly doubt this will happen, but I even heard a co-worker talking about it.

We discussed it a little upthread.

That hype, though, is going to be in non-political circles. Nobody who actually follows politics closely is excited about following up a reality TV POTUS with a TV host POTUS.

I don't get the joke.

I thought it was just unfunny satire.

Cory Booker has been in campaign mode since a year or two before Hillary was nominated. He just saw the writing on the wall and didn't want to burn his political capital to run up against a juggernaut.

GOP's strongest candidate is likely, once again, Mitt Romney. He's still a dog against the field not including Trump and dog against Trump by himself at this point, but if Romney manages to make hay standing up to Trump in the Senate, he's gonna look awfully presidential as a senator.

My read on Romney (if I know anything about finance types) is that he doesn't plan on running for POTUS specifically but sees his seat in the Senate as a springboard to get him back into GOP leadership, possibly taking McConnel's job and/or running for POTUS once more (although I doubt he'd take the risk)

I think Romney and Kasich are the two that could legitimately beat Trump heads up in a GOP primary, AND would actually consider it... Others like Rubio, Cruz, etc are better served by waiting it out and getting a clean campaign cycle instead of primarying a sitting POTUS. Kasich is 65 and Romney is 70... Both have been never-Trumpers, both have spoken out against him at times. They seem to be keeping their options open for 2020.

I'm not so sure this is a mistake... certainly doesn't seem to be a big one.

Kasich's #2 is running for governor of Ohio now that he's term-limited out. She's made it known that she hasn't hung out with him in over a year and went as far as to claim that Kasich endorsed her opponents, when in reality he had (apparently unsolicited) endorsed her. That's how radioactive Kasich is *at home* after opposing Trump. Plus the guy is a walking and breathing "hello fellow kids" meme.

I'm probably far more right-leaning than this thread's participants, and I love Romney, but the campaign he ran was abysmal and there's no way he could recreate the Trump coalition, and everyone knows it. Part of Trump getting nominated was the GOP wanting a fighter after Romney basically sat there and took the beating when Candy Crowley jumped in and then again when Obama dropped the "the Cold War's been over for decades" line. He's a great man, and I think he would've been a phenomenal president, but he's no populist and he can't win a GOP primary against Trump.

Rubio is not smart enough, organized enough, and (honestly) white enough to win GOP nomination.

Cruz is too much of an ass to win the nomination in normal election cycles.
