Arctic take: Bernie wins the nomination or we get four more years of Trump

Tens/hundreds of millions of dollars were stolen from the WI treasury. One lady in particular managed to swindle over $3,000,000 from the system and was arrested in her fancy new house. She was eligible for 35 years in prison but sentenced to 14 months.

Christ, the school districts themselves participate in sketchy behavior by artificially inflating attendance on the "count days" so they get more state funding, I can't imagine what sort of shenanigans will be dreamed up in a national program where it'll be impossible to oversee them all.
For the benefit of the readers, this is at least mostly true. Rampant fraud was uncovered in 2009, and obviously nothing was done about it because fraud in government programs is an unfixable and inherent problem.

Oh wait, no, that last part is not true at all. Scott Walker managed to do something reasonable and implemented a crackdown on fraud and quality standards for childcare providers to be eligible for subsidy money in 2012. Warren is proposing having quality standards, btw. There is even an already-existing, high quality federal child care program that can be emulated and generalized rather than copying Wisconsin's first draft.

We might get 4 more years of Trump anyway. The dem party is too fractured right now. I don't see moderates or independents going strong for Bernie/Warren. Centrists like Biden/Booker will alienate the far left progressive base.

Meanwhile when the chips are down Trump will always have his conservative and religious base. When the election is decided by 3-5 states that could be enough. If I had to wager today I'd bet on Trump getting reelected unless the economy tanks.

I love that searching for 200 daycare providers closed leads to this page (which is a site Insoo linked already haha).

Re: Who will run against Trump in 2020?

The two most important traits for me in a candidate are: liberal and anti-establishment. Bernie and Warren are good. I like Harris too but she's not as liberal or anti-establishment as them, so if there is a large contingent of the party that is more moderate, she might be able to unify everyone. Beto is a bit of a wild card. None of the other candidates interest me much.

Trump's best chance may be having someone like Jeb! clearing the field early and then portraying Jeb! as a Romney like insider (he is) and grabbing enough delegates to make it impossible/irrelevant for super delegates to go Jeb!'s way.
Amazing how well it fits, imo. But anyway, I disagree because Bernie has a very high floor compared to all but the most well-recognised names in the potential field, which means a Biden entry would hurt Bernie, not help him, certainly in initial polling and probably well past Iowa.

Portraying this or that rival candidate as this or that bad thing is for later in the game, when the field is narrowed, or, at the earliest, when the Momentum Carousel starts to turn. Early doors and assuming a large field a la the GOP in '16, you don't want to mention your opponents by name at all, especially not if you have higher name recognition. You want them talking about you, not you talking about them. Everything you say should be about you, about your policies and vision.

Or, dispense with the myriad of easily gamed programs and consolidate all welfare systems into a monthly check made out to John Q. Poorguy and call it a day. If he spends it on things not related to meeting his daily needs, too bad so sad.

I don't see how Bernie is not the favorite in the current pool of democratic candidates.

Because you live in an internet bubble. There's a real world out there filled with millions of people who aren't part of the woke internet club of uber-lefties.

And in that real world, Bernie got 43% of the 2016 primary votes, and all indications point to his brand of politics getting more popular in the Democratic Party since then

Yes, in a race against one Hillary Rodham Clinton. Context matters.

Re: Who will run against Trump in 2020?

Bernie's politics are more popular now. A bunch of Bernie-like candidates were elected in 2018. There is no other candidate running with huge built in notoriety like Hillary had in 2016. If Biden runs, then he will probably be the favorite, but as of now...

For things like child care and health care and education, government programs provide more equitable and efficient solutions than just cutting checks. For other things, like food, sure, cutting checks is preferable.

Works in other places, didn't work perfectly under Scott Walker. I wonder if the problem was the program or the incompetent government in charge at the time!?!

I'd sell Biden so much btw. He's never winning.

I know governors all just blend together, but this one is worth correcting.

This lizard-person defrauded Medicare for hundreds of millions of dollars and his company ended up paying ~$900 million in fines for it, he was charged with nothing and went on to be a 2 term Governor and is now a sitting US Senator.
