Guess you first have to define 'culty'

Odd how many non-religious people might think most of the things about it being a cult could apply to any religion.
That's kinda my point :-)

I really don't get why LDS is supposed to be more of a cult than any other Christian sect. It's pretty tame compared with 90% of the stuff in the Bible.
Nobody suggested it's a cult only that mainstream Christian churches consider it's a cult.

Wow, very interesting. Now time for politicians...

Mormons def not a cult. There has to be some sort of isolation from society, mind control, charismatic leader knows best, etc, type stuff to qualify I'd say.

Culty is having some but not all of the elements of a cult. Mind control: check. Charismatic leader: less so in LDS, more so in a lot of evangelical Christian sects.

At the time, the move to Utah (then nominally part of Mexico) effectively isolated them from the rest of American society. And Brigham Young certainly was a charismatic leader who knew best. So, depending on exactly how you define culty, at least mid-19th Century Mormonism might fit the definition.

Sure, I ain't talking bout the 19th century. Mormons are quite an integrated group nowadays.
10-08-2011 , 01:58 AM
the bottom line for me is that mormonism doesn't seem any stupider than any other religion.

I do think there are quite a few morons in the US who wouldn't vote for romney because they don't think he's a christian. Although who knows if many of them live in swing states.

I kept reading this as 'quite a few mormons' and going, "What?!"

Damn muscle relaxers..

.

Well, I would say that there are two degrees of stupidity when it comes to religion. One is completely stupid and those are folks who believe their scripture literally which leads to stuff like creationism or believing native Americans are white. Second is for guys who doesn't take religious doctrine all too seriously and just likes spiritual life the church and community provides. I wouldn't call 2nd stupid, just slightly naive or deluded.
No idea which kind Romney is but he seems reasonable to me and tries to keep religion out.

Btw, cliffs on Mormonism: http://www.milkandcookies.com/link/59507/detail/

Utter drivel.

I can't believe I just read through probably four pages or so where instead of reading about any of the dozens of legit campaign promises that Obama hasn't honored, I had to read an argument where a guy who believes what was written above needed to get calmed down because Obama hasn't upheld his promise to unite/undivide/not-divide/do whatever it was that W. was so awesome at. And that some other poster said he was being "more reasonable" than everyone was giving him credit for.

Why does virgin Mary have glasses?

I had never heard of Lawrence O'Donnel until like a week or two ago, when I saw this video:

.. and became an instant fan.

Now you guys are forcing me to reevaluate.

As Dids (iirc) said his job is to make a lot of noise. When he makes noise about stuff you care about you like him, if he makes noise about stuff you dont care about you dont like him.

I got to say this, that pic of Mary is really offensive. I'm not a religious person but that's just sad (posting that) the entire post is offensive.
10-08-2011 , 10:18 PM
Whats offensive about it? Its not remotely offensive.

Now this image on the other hand:

You don't have to agree, I'm stating my opinion.
10-08-2011 , 10:22 PM
OK...but it is mary, with a label saying "i was pregnant before i had sex", indicating she was a virgin, which probably explains her nickname of "virgin Mary",
