Curious if people think something like Swing Left (focusing on swing districts to take back the House this fall) would be a good use of time. In Baltimore, you're near VA-10, NJ-2, PA-7, and PA-16.

When is it time to GTFO?

Both actively resisting and making contingency plans are difficult when you’re just trying to work and live your life, especially when none of this **** is directly affecting you (yet). Trump running at all has inspired my wife and i to be more politically active - I message and call my representatives and she attended a protest when there was one here (cops overreacted almost immediately and created a debacle). I do think we need more marches and demonstrations and people need to absolutely be ready to protest if Mueller is fired.

I think at this moment the number 1 concern should be mid-term elections. I doubt the GOP in its disarray will have time to implement too many shenanigans and we do seem about to have a legit blue wave in repudiation or Trump. I have some time off in the summer so I’m hoping to help out my congressional candidate (I believe our R rep is running for Senate and Dem should be able to take back her seat, plus hoping to flip Flake’s seat to blue). If you’re Muslim or Latino and have roots in another country I’d strongly consider keeping those options in mind because who knows if **** will hit the fan

Edit: thanks goofy, my district is indeed on there as I expected! Clinton beat Trump here so there is hope despite all the rich white people near me and the inclusion of some rural areas. Pretty sure Gabby Giffords was previously our rep

Re: When is it time to GTFO?

Historically when most people realize it at that point they're not allowed to.

Indeed if you're a non white you should've had emergency plans by now to be able to gtfo at a moments notice.

The best answer to this question was November 2016 but we're still here so... Also the issue of where to go, which is another problem entirely.

People should be trying to find ways to work remotely indefinitely (or run an online business of some sort). If you can do that, you can float indefinitely. You can spend six months a year in the Schengen Area and six months a year in the UK, for starters... So you could bounce back and forth indefinitely. But, it would probably be somewhat expensive due to having to rent short-term. That said, the cost of living can be surprisingly low in some places.

Technically, you'd probably be breaking the law by working while you're supposed to only be there as a tourist, but if you're doing something remotely/online, I don't know how you'd get caught.

Definitely worth doing. I will be campaigning in NY and/or NH this year.

That might work for a young, single person without kids. If they have the right skill sets. And they enjoy being nomadic. And they can afford to make the jump in the first place. And they're willing to make a huge gamble that might really screw them over by the time they get to middle age.

Definitely tougher/impossible with kids. I don't think you need to be single, though, and it wouldn't be permanent... You might do it for one or two years, then decide your long-term future in 2021.

Lol at using the "it's possible to care about more than one thing at a time" rebuttal on me because that's usually my line to bigoted whataboutthis Islamophobes who can't fathom why people don't care about misogyny in some Middle East country or gays being thrown off rooftops by ISIS. Either that, or double shame on me if I unwittingly indicated you can't think or care about more than one thing at a time. My point was you don't run. Especially because...

Jfc if he's talking about Dreamers, American Muslims, Latinos, or poc, if that doesn't make you want to fight alongside them then I really do think you should gtfo.

If it wasn't clear in my OP, I think the "time to GTFO" scenario is still a ways off and am absolutely fighting. But like, I don't want to end up like a jew in the holocaust who could have left but didn't. I am a straight white guy though, althoguh I'm pretty vocally publically anti-trump on social media etc.

Re: When is it time to GTFO?

It doesn't look like he has to do anything. If he refuses to participate, someine else redraws the map. Push will come to shove later I guess, but it seems like the election authorities are going to be more inclined to accept a court order than something from a atate senator. I think it'd be a bigger crisis if it were a governor.

Probably so. I'm just fed up with the whole lot of them. And I tend to wear my heart on my sleeve.

Did you go to the Women's March in DC this year? Also, volunteer for a campaign of some sort. Find a swing district this fall, and give some time... It shouldn't interfere with a 9-5, because I would think a lot of canvassing happens from 5-7pm and on weekends.
Yea, people need to actually get out and do ****. I live near Gainesville, FL. I don't live here but the name of this particular town is Williston. It's about 15-20 min outside of Gainesville. Anyway, I stopped to get gas there last week and went inside to pay. I happened to look at the newspapers while I was waiting in line. This was the front page article.

http://www.willistonpioneer.com/cont...file-unopposed

One person filed for Mayor after the old mayor retired. ONE PERSON. In addition 2 people "won" council seats. There's not even going to be an election. A dude said "I want to be mayor," and they were like "OK!"

Michael Moore keeps harping on this ****. He says over and over that people aren't even being opposed and winning elections by default. He's correct and this is an example.

Re: When is it time to GTFO?

If he gets a war and manages to use the rise in popularity to proceed with the Eric Price initiative of a private intelligence agency that only answers to the WH, it's probably a good time time to start contemplating exit strategies.

It's already a well established truth both in this administration and its followers that only fealty is patriotic.

Then again, this administration is mostly recognizable by how completely inept it is. So who knows.

If things got real bad id guess some countries would accept refugees. They would be getting the best and brightest when the intellectuals flee the purges.

On one hand, sure, but on the other, I mean, I dunno if the place to plant the flag of grassroots governing is serving on the city council of a town of 2800. Do they even get paid? It probably sounds romantic and **** but then you actually go do the job and holy crap that must be the most boring thing on the planet.

Like, start with actually forcing competitive elections in every House district (which, as we've read, Democrats are doing much better at in this cycle - this NYT article notes that only 20 R-held districts are going unchallenged so far in 2018, versus 80 D-held districts) and state legislatures.

Re: When is it time to GTFO?

GTFO might have made sense for those privileged enough to do so back in the Europe of the 1930s... but it doesn't make a lick-o-sense here in the only global superpower of the 2010s. There isn't anywhere to get away from that. Even if the US empire goes all Darth Vader that'll be the "boot stamping on a human face - forever" that G.Orwell wrote of. What Orwell didn't foresee is that 'forever' is looking like maybe only 100 or so more years before the ecosystem collapses. There is nowhere to hide from that.

Stay & fight back is the only option.

Of course, I'm assuming that some of you can do that without becoming a stateless person.
