To be technically accurate (not that most of the people posting in the politics forum care about accuracy), the United States has 22% of the world's
known prison population. Some countries like North Korea don't tell the world how many people they have incarcerated, and some human rights organizations question the legitimacy of prison numbers published by repressive regimes like Iran and China.
Having said that, I personally believe that we have
way too many people in prison. With the exception of extremely violent persons like murderers and rapists, I don't think that incarceration is the most +EV way of dealing with lawbreakers.
