When I listen to women describing their experiences at the hands of men like Harvey Weinstein and [the late] Roger Ailes, I have sometimes wondered what the world would be like (for men) if the power dynamics were reversed - if women had all the power and control - especially the economic power. (Would there be a 2+2 web site if 80-90 percent of poker players were women and it was considered "unmanly" for a man to engage in competitive activities like poker?) A better question: Would women really be like men if they had this "power" that Ms. Alderman describes in her novel?
I suppose the most noticeable change would be in the area of sex roles. If men were still loaded down with testosterone, I imagine most men would be gay ... What man would want to risk having sex with a woman who could literally shock him to death if she thought he wasn't GIB and was a "selfish lover" who didn't give her a good orgasm? (I suppose most men would have to learn how to become accomplished muff divers ...) I wonder who would be the first man brave enough to write a book entitled "The Male Mystique" and found a magazine entitled "Man" while spearheading a "Men's Liberation Movement" against a severe female backlash? What kind of world would it be where women made most of the laws?
It will be interesting if an independent movie studio decides to make a movie based on Naomi Alderman's novel. (I doubt if the Weinstein Company opts to produce such a movie.)
