ProPublica has audio recordings from inside a detention center

Really hard to listen to. Just no words.

I see Jeff Merkley has been down at the detention centers mixing it up. I'm not sure what kind of influence Oregon can really wield, but at least we send senators to DC who don't accept any of this bull****.

As far as elections go the important groups are Republicans who disapprove, Dems who approve, and independents. Hopefully.

+1 as long as the good candidates aren't splitting up the good voters.

I thought the word on the street was that Kirstjen Nielsen was going to quit because she was fed up with Trump. Guess the thrill of running a kiddie concentration camp was too good to pass up.

Suzzer's trip report of Guatemala sounded pretty cool. I can't move until my kids graduate HS and maybe even college, but moving there might be good if they'll have me.

Period.
Latinos are conservative by nature. They loved Ronald Reagan. My parents wanted to visit the Reagan Library a few years ago. I watched as one Latino family after another took a fawning picture with his statue.

All you have to do is not declare war on them and call them animals. But nope - that's just a bridge too far for today's party of pure white hot rage.

Was there a comprehensive TR somewhere in this forum? Or do you just mean the snippets he would post every so often?

People are objectively better down here. It's a simpler culture based on trust, politeness and mutual respect. No interaction is too small that you can't at least say good afternoon and offer a smile. You just feel better about yourself at the end of the day.

I just got my car inspected to put on a boat. I was prepared for a day of bureaucratic hell. Every interaction was pleasant and smiling - with a big "Go Panama!" (in their first World Cup game) at the end. Later when we saw the inspector at the main building - we all waved high like we'd seen an old friend - lol. When does that happen in America?

It's like the midwesterners I grew up with - before half of them were poisoned with toxic hatred.

Re: The US is detaining refugees and asylum seekers and forcibly separating families

wow, facing a legitimate challenge from beto, Ted Cruz introduces legislation to keep immigrant families together after they cross the border
"All Americans are rightly horrified by the images we are seeing on the news, children in tears pulled away from their mothers and fathers," Cruz wrote in a release. "This must stop. Now. We can end this crisis by passing the legislation I am introducing this week."

The provisions of the legislation, according to the news release, include:

- Doubling the number of federal immigration judges, from roughly 375 to 750.

- Authorizing new temporary shelters, with accommodations to keep families together.

- Mandating that illegal immigrant families be kept together, absent aggravated criminal conduct or threat of harm to children.

- Providing for expedited processing and review of asylum cases so that — within 14 days — those who meet the legal standards will be granted asylum and those who do not will be immediately returned to their home countries.

Re: The US is detaining refugees and asylum seekers and forcibly separating families

There is a second rebuttal to the argument that people who commit misdemeanors have their children taken away so why is this different. Besides the argument that these people are not criminals, there is the perhaps stronger argument that it is wrong to incarcerate the non dangerous small time criminals if it will harm their children.

That will be countered by the argument that such a policy allows people to game the system. To which the reply should be "that is a downside we must endure. Just like when terrorists use children as human shields. When they do that we don't bomb.

The general principle is that people should not be as concerned as they appear to be about getting scammed. Whether it applies to this issue, when be approached by a down and out appearing panhandler, or when considering my proposal to give amnesty to criminals who could get an innocent person out of jail when they in fact were the actual perpatrater.

Cruz knows this isn't passing. He's putting it up because if it doesn't pass, he can point to it and say, "Look, I have enough of a heart not to want to do what Donald Trump did to these people." If it does, he's a hero who put his job on the line to save these poor children.

Translation: Cruz is gearing up for a 2020 run.
