I'm just wondering and wanted to ask those living in Arizona and Texas. Is this having a negative impact politically? Is there any chance this could swing those areas blue or purple because of this? Or are folks generally gun ho about it?

A state review into the treatment of immigrant teens held at a Virginia detention center confirms the facility uses restraint techniques that can include strapping children to chairs and placing mesh bags over their heads.

But investigators concluded the harsh treatment described by detainees at the Shenandoah Valley juvenile center did not meet the state’s legal threshold of abuse or neglect, according to a copy of the findings issued on Monday by the Virginia department of juvenile justice and obtained by the Associated Press.

strapping kids to chairs and putting mesh bags over their heads = not abuse

sounds legit

If, God forbid, there were pictures or video of kids strapped to chairs with bags over their heads, the real abusers would be the media.

Pretty effed up. I hope people are pissed off over more than just the coordination between cops.

All this bull**** seems never ending. Just in general, not specifically the grotesque policy direction Trump took. Deporting in record numbers every administration seems like an inefficient use of taxpayer money. There has got to be a system that costs less and probably ultimately is less inhumane than what we have now.

16 fathers were taken away from the Carnes Detention Facility where they were with their children and shipped somewhere and thrown into isolation where one of them tried to kill himself because they were not quote going with the flow unquote at the Detention Center.

We are the Baddies.

God that is so heart breaking

So where is the line? My empathy for anyone who overlooks this **** is on empty at this point.

Donate to the ACLU, what else?

Christ man.

There are gonna be some real ****ed up horror stories about what went on when those kids were alone with guards.

There is a very real possibility that some of these kids grow up and murder Americans in retaliation.

That’s got to be a lock at this point. Some not insignificant number of kids (maybe more than 100) have now been effectively orphaned by this policy and will likely never see their parent again.

We now have our first reported death of a toddler who was woefully under treated while in ICE Detention, contracted a respiratory infection, and died 6 weeks later. https://www.cnn.com/2018/08/28/us/te...ath/index.html

Good Job Awval on getting that $250 tax cut. Good Job Mason on that booming poker economy!

The Trump administration announced a new rule Thursday that would allow immigrant children with their parents to be held in detention indefinitely, upending a ban on indefinite detention that has been in place for 20 years.

The rule, proposed by the departments of Homeland Security and Health and Human Services, goes into effect in 60 days and will allow Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to keep children with their mothers in detention facilities while their cases for asylum play out in court.

A DHS official speaking on the condition of anonymity said the purpose of the rulemaking is to terminate the 1997 Flores settlement agreement that said children could not be held in detention longer than 20 days. The result may mean the issue is taken to appellate courts or even the Supreme Court.

There may be no fix for this. Half the democrats in this country are "Law and Order" authoritarians. Dems weren't going to make these moves, but a lot of dems will be afraid to undo them. They'll be vigorously pushing for nicer family detention centers.
09-06-2018 , 12:02 PM
The new rule was expected since Trump signed his executive order backing off separating the children from their families. I hope the ACLU hasn't wasted the time since then. It's always been clear this is going to the courts. Trump is betting there's less outrage if he replaces kid jails with family jails.

Quote:
Families will be detained together "where appropriate and consistent with law" and based on available resources, the order said. (Past administrations released many immigrants awaiting court hearings partly because they didn’t have enough detention space.)

Trump’s order directed the Defense Secretary to provide to DHS any existing facilities available for the housing and care of immigrant families, and to "construct such facilities if necessary and consistent with law."

Holy ****. And $750/day to imprison these kids.

This money that they are lifting from FEMA and the Coast Guard and probably a lot of places is going to this. People are making a lot of money here.

We really are a historically bad country at this point.

^^Again. I mean it’s all well and good to invoke Nazi Germany but...slavery, native genocide, segragation, internment, Vietnam, prison industrial complex, on and on...this is right in line.
