how many ACists in the world? how many ACists in the world?

09-07-2007 , 12:59 PM
Anyone care to take a shot at an estimate? I'm curious about the total number of "Borodog-type" ACist's in the world -- that is, educated, productive people who have come to the AC philosophy based on reasoned economic and ethical considerations (specifically not counting the "teen angst" variety of anarchists).

I'm going to throw out the first number that comes to mind -- I'm guessing that there are fewer than a million such people in the world, total. How badly wrong (or how overly safe) do you think this guess is?

If you are making the distinction between supporters of very small versus NO government then I would think 1 million is probably on the high side (especially if you throw out the teen-angst anarchists). This forum WAY skews one's perspective on the support for the AC philosophy.

To be honest I have never met one in person and did not even know about AC until I joined this forum. I suspect the number of true adherents to be less than 1,000,000.

Are you counting self proclaimed ACists only or all those whose principles when logically applied lead to a society without a state?

Estimates for both would be welcome, of course, but I suppose I had in mind the people who at some point have had the conscious realization that their ideas and principles ultimately point toward a stateless society.

Whatever the number is, it's growing exponentially.

After you've converted a hundred people, and each one of those has converted another hundred.

So you believe that if we can get 10,000 people, we can stop paying taxes? I think we need much more than that, and they can't just be people who think AC is an okay idea. They need to be people who are willing to stop paying taxes, and suffer whatever consequences the government is able to impose. I think we need at least 1,000,000 such people before anything can be effectively done.

It looks like the real problem will be "What's AC's position on space travel" since 10 years after the 10 trillion mark, there's gonna be like a bajillion of them, they'll have to press onward.

Backhanded mockery of the minority who hold anarchist views is rather silly. History proves over and over that those who create real social progress are always as a rule those who hold minority opinions.

1) Lighten up Francis.

2) (Edit: Not really at you Kaj, everyone in general) Stop with the "We're hated so we're right". Scientologists are a "hated" minority, and certainly you (and I) think they're nuts. Simply being hated doesn't make one right. I'm sure you believe in your ideals just like everyone does, but they idea that simply being in the minority promises success or should instantly confer respect is pretty silly

3) Lighten up Francis.

The first very few the latter nearly everyone.

Based on reading this forum, my answer would be "too many."

Q: How can you tell an ACist from a statist?
A: This isn't a joke, I'm actually curious, who's who in here?
09-08-2007 , 08:19 AM
Anyone who has felt the authentic joy of real intellectual community is an AC'er waiting to happen.

On the other hand, everyone who knows only the suspicious human, the small-minded human, the self-loathing, creeping human who needs the whip and the yoke...those are the statists.

How many people dont vote?

They may not be educated on the finer points of AC or even know what AC is but they are essentially living their life in an AC manner.

The funny thing about this forum is that the majority of the 'statists' are actually minarchists. Its amazing how crazy the debates can get over such a small point. We've lost most of the true statists over time. I actually cant think of their names, but there were two main ones. Can anyone refresh my memory?

Stick around, it doesn't take too long to figure it out.

There can't be too many Borodog types. Certainly not a million. You're aiming too high when you mention him, he's that smart. As to how many (how to put it?) 'like the sentiment' or 'crave the freedom' promised by an ideally realized AC society the number is vast but it is all no use anyway. Human nature would never allow it.

Right, so you'll notice I don't being up that "Sanity/rightousness by consensus" argument.
