Don't even need a video cassette recorder - whatever that is.
I'm sure you really do know that iPlayer programmes are recorded.

My point was that politics programmes are so much better when watched live.

I missed this story about the institutionally racist party because we've come to expect it from them:

Tories suspend 14 members over alleged Islamophobia

Quote:
The suspensions come at a time of growing scrutiny of the Conservative party’s record on Islamophobia. The former Tory chairman Sayeeda Warsi again called for an internal inquiry and suggested the most senior figures in the party – including Theresa May – needed to take the problem more seriously.

The messages included one from an individual who wrote that they would like to “turf all Muslims out of public office”. Another said they wanted to “get rid of all mosques”. Many comments were found on a Facebook group supporting Jacob Rees-Mogg.

A third said they could not vote for Sajid Javid, the home secretary, in any forthcoming leadership race because that would amount to a vote for “Islam to lead this country”.

A post in the Facebook group supporting Rees-Mogg, which showed a map of all mosques in Britain, provoked several hostile responses, including: “This is not a Muslim country” and “We’re just letting the takeover happen”.

And this one:

Ex-chancellor George Osborne tells Conservatives to 'fix Islamophobia problem'

Quote:
George Osborne has attacked the Conservatives' "problem" with Islamophobia and urged the party to do more to tackle it.

The former chancellor-turned-editor of the Evening Standard newspaper called on journalists to "shine a light" on some Tory members' and elected officials' prejudice towards Muslims.

He told Sky News that both Islamophobia in the Conservatives and antisemitism in the Labour Party "shouldn't be happening at all".

Stop kidding yourself you're earning that much.

The Walter Mitty of 2+2.

Anti Islamic comments on a Facebook group supporting JRM is not the same as Jewish MPs leaving the Labour party over antisemitism.

There are only two Muslim Tory MPs, and as one of them is the current Home Secretary with his eye fixed on becoming Prime Minster I feel you're being a little disingenuous in using this metric.

Tbf, Baroness Token has been calling the Tory Party institutionally Islamophobic for years now. She must make up like 10% of Muslim Tory parliamentarians.

Ah yes I'm the one who goes on repetitive "rants".

Everything I've read of the canary its just the daily mail except instead of hating minorities they hate everyone who is critical of corbyn. The output quality is no better.

Its not what I meant. The media we need would be nuking both parties from orbit. Its the only way to make sure.

Labourites: why did Liz Kendall finish last (with 4.5%) in the 2015 leadership election?

Boris Johnson : Investigating historic child abuse is "Spaff[ing money] up the wall"

https://www.theguardian.com/politics...buse-inquiries

Quote:
“And one comment I would make is I think an awful lot of money and an awful lot of police time now goes into these historic offences and all this malarkey.

“You know, £60m I saw was being spaffed up a wall on some investigation into historic child abuse and all this kind of thing. What on earth is that going to do to protect the public now?”
How many millions (billions?) have been spaffed up the wall in the brexit shambles because he wanted to weaken Cameron and advance his own status. If I were a victim of historic child abuse hearing this callous dismissal of my chance to get justice I would be apoplectic. As it is I'm just angry.

Because Yvette Cooper and Andy Burnham would be preferred by most who
would consider voting for her.

YC in particular is in a different class imo.

This is the moron who went to Myanmar and started reciting a Kipling poem. He isn't big on learning lessons from history.

Plus he is probably worried about when they get around to investigating people still alive that he is good friends with.

I agree, I'd be quite happy with Cooper as PM.

Am a big YC fan although on principle I think voting for the Iraq war should be a big enough mistake to preclude leading a major political party.

I think I would too, but would like to see her run Labour in opposition for a year or so first.

But crazy times, so yeah, if they could bin Corbyn and get her in, I might have a good think about voting labour if someone could arrange that please. Especially if the tories can't get a decent replacement for May (most of the runners seem quite terrible).

Gove is the clear pick for Tory leader - no one else is close - but I'd probably still go for Cooper at the GE, and I think that would be the case for many swing voters.

Shame she has the same equity to be next leader as Lisa Nandy, but there we go.
03-14-2019 , 02:25 AM
Gove? lol.
03-14-2019 , 02:43 AM
Who else is there? Javid is the only other decent option, however he never quite convinces in a crisis.
03-14-2019 , 03:06 AM
Raab is the only one who works for me, but I've really no idea if he's really up to it. The rest are awful, but the worst of all would be Hunt.

He's completely unreadable and a bit bonkers imo, and reminds me of a movie I saw years ago called 'The Rise and Rise of Michael Rimmer' where a nobody no one knows anything about seems to keep falling upwards till he is made PM in perpetuity.
03-14-2019 , 03:35 AM
You've just described John Major.

I agree the oleaginous Hunt is an underestimated candidate, and a scary one who can easily position himself as the compromise candidate who usually wins Tory party leadership elections.

Cooper needs to raise her profile a lot more but the country might not be ready yet for someone so closely linked to the Blair/Brown era. It's possible she's not a natural at the networking and building support that any eventual challenger to Corbyn would need.

The man that didn't know that the UK is located very close to France seems like a strange choice, even if the talent pool is thin.
03-14-2019 , 03:55 AM
lol, fair enough. I haven't got a leg to stand on with that one.

And yeah, I find Hunt a scary individual. I feel he's got psycho written through him like a stick of Brighton Rock.

I was trying to think when was the last time a prime minister so thoroughly lost control of everything. Probably Callaghan in Winter of Discontent? But this feels more Heath in the early 70s.
03-14-2019 , 06:27 AM
Dislike Gove (he's genial manner belies some wacky and bigoted views) but he'd take on and fillet the current LOTO in electoral debates.
03-14-2019 , 06:35 AM
Dislike Gove (more or less goes without saying) but I've seen him as a very serious contender for a while and probably the least worst of the front runners.

Hunt is probably the other least worst although he may be the worst of all.

**** they're an unedifying bunch.
