A pair of news items

Six Miami firefighters — including the son of a former fire chief — have been cut loose from the department after authorities found a noose over a black colleague’s photos which had also been defaced with sexually explicit images

Tom Kawczynski told the Bangor paper that he’s against bringing people from other countries and cultures to the United States. He also said he is not racist and argued that one can be “pro-white” without harboring hate against people of other races. After he moved to Maine a year ago, he started a group called New Albion, which, according to its website, promotes “traditional western values emphasizing the positive aspects of our European heritage and uniquely American identity.”

In the 2nd one, guy is a "town manager" (is that like a mayor?) in Maine

Town manager is typically not elected, he's the highest ranking civil servant in many towns.

Speaking of doomsday, there a pretty cool article on a new laser that's being built that will be able to rip apart space itself. I'm fairly sure it won't trigger a vacuum decay that would destroy the known universe, but who knows.
