Trump’s America Trump’s America

But yeah I entered Trump's America for the first time tonight. Though I was "randomly" searched by security at the request of the TSA before even getting on a flight there. Only the third consecutive trip to/from America that it's happened.

I swear I'm on a watch list for some reason. No idea why but I probably am.

I'm a darker skinned white dude with a big beard who gets randomly selected far more often than randomly. Lots of fun.

It's amazing how delusional and selfish they are. I've never seen people so happy about losing money to the 1%. They still think that trickle down economics is a thing that works to create jobs when the money goes straight to the executives. When I pointed out the millions losing health care, they used whataboutism to talk about health care in Europe despite having no real experience using it. They can't explain how what is happening is good for health care so they just replace with some idea on what they think Trump is doing in the future about it.

I mean they are completely disconnected from reality. They were saying things that were patently false. According to them there's a huge movement of people wanting to buy things made in America instead of overseas and that apparently manufacturing jobs are coming back to America in droves. Also most people in Canada are coming to America for our health care because of how bad theirs is. Apparently Italians pay 70% of their income to their government as well.

Everything is about what Trump will do not what he has done. It's as though they think he just got inaugurated and that the past year never happened.

I guess they didn't use any racial slurs or make racist statements during the conversation.
Yesterday, my mom was ranting about Bernie's college for all plan and how he was a quack. I, of course, had to chime in and said something to the effect of "So your line is high school then?" Her answer was that nobody would ever pay taxes to pay for any schooling. When I asked her how the **** she thinks I went to kindergarten, grade school, middle school, and high school without her getting a bill, she said we must have slipped under the cracks. I've been done with her for a while. Trump is bringing out the stupid in people for everyone to see.

She also things 'Obummer' was born in Kenya. You're not alone dealing with parents like this.

It's bull**** but at least you know why you're getting searched so often.

Sorry to hear. People are dumber and more bigoted than I imagined.

My mother believes Obama was a secret Muslim. So mine and yours would get on well.
-------------------

Anyway, the conversation finally ended with the boyfriend saying "If you don't like it get out of the country." Her boyfriend is seemingly unaware that I already am. Thankfully I'm only friendly towards him when I have to be which is the short trip I take back for the holidays every year.

My mother smartly holds back most of the time but with her boyfriend in tandem, she gains a bit of confidence. Of course two awful arguments coming at the same time is worse than one. I can't bother trying to reverse 40+ years of Republican bull****.

After I declared more than 10k to bring across the border for the WSOP I had my car (or the car of who I was travelling with) lightly searched every time I crossed the border for about 5 years(~5 times). 0 times before or after.

I've been pondering on what my mother's boyfriend told me that ended the conversation (If you don't like it then get out of the country) after I disagreed with their despicable alt-right nationalistic views. Seemed like a knee-jerk, almost instinctual response to get somebody to shut up when an effective counterargument cannot be made.

I began thinking to myself: Why should I go back to live in America if I have the choice to live some place else? The only reason would be because of family. But how often would I see them if I did move back? I mean no immediate reason comes to mind. What can I get in America that I couldn't get in Scotland or the UK in general? Maybe Brexit kicking in will make America more appealing by comparison. Who knows for sure?

I'm on a 6month+ road trip to South America - definitely looking to settle somewhere along the way for a few years. The situation in the US is toxic to my brain.

sounds awesome.

Yeah I’d love to peace out of here for a while but it’s hard when you have a good job, a new house, and a baby on the way. Maybe in a few years if this country remains so messed up since i think it’s taking years off my life.

I can go back to Canada but it's a oneway ticket. I built a good life and career here, have roots, wife and kids have connections, the whole bs America capitalist dream well underway. The thing is even on a vapid, selfish plane they have set that to crash and burn.

I question whether it is too selfish to leave instead of staying and fighting, but I also am more scared than most that we are headed for something way worse than a tough economy and it is foolish to expose my family to that when I have an alternative.

It's going to be harder in 5 or 6 short years after the kid starts school.

I'm not necessarily thinking of leaving the country, but just some more freedom and I'm not in love with the city I'm in, but for the 2 more years until the youngest graduates HS moving is out of the question and it already seems like the first year of college at least -- and then, who knows? I'm a rambling man at heart and lived in at least 20 different places before I graduated HS, but now I have kids who have lived almost their whole lives in one house.

I say this with 100% sincerity and is advice I need to take right now as well, but have you considered taking maybe a full year off from 2+2, or at least politics?

I feel that the times I've gone a month or more without spending any time on here gives me more of a DGAF outlook on the subjects that I was reading up on and more interested in doing productive **** with my life.

Ignorance is strength in Trump's America.

Suzzer tried that a few times, cost him a few hundred bucks.

One of us. One of us. One of us.

I'm a middle aged male US citizen living abroad and with bank accounts abroad for no apparent reason (read "not military", not "working for oil company"). That checks all the boxes and guarantees you'll get searched every time. Plan on it and get used to it. There's nothing new about it with Trump, though.

How many of you are expecting a political discussion to emerge on Christmas Eve/Day?

If you are, how many are going to participate in the discussion?

Please share your results if you have them. Personally, I'm looking to extricate myself from any potential discussion and if things go rotten for everybody, freak out and remind them that I see most of them once a year and that I may never come back if this is how my family will behave. The nuclear option will force a bunch of apologies and they would likely badger the others into silence.

That said, I don't expect that to happen to me. If they made it through a year's worth of celebrations without a breakout of this nature, then they'll make it for Christmas as well. Just gotta hope nobody takes the bait my mom's boyfriend will toss out when he inevitably gets tipsy.
12-24-2017 , 05:11 PM
There may well be Trump bashing at Christmas which will be approved of by all, even the relatives from the UP in Michigan, which is Trump country. Trump hate also from my M-in-Law who went to HS with Mitch McConnell in Kentucky.

Extended family is all Republicans who hate Trump. Odd dynamic, they get credit for unqualified hatred of Trump, but I get the feeling most would be loving a Pence Administration.

Yeah the anti trump repubs seem to hate the sinner and love the sin.
12-24-2017 , 08:14 PM
Yeah man, trump makes them take a cold, hard look in a mirror and see just how ****ty of people they actually all are. He lays bare their terrible policies, preferences, prejudices, etc. Of course they don’t like being confronted with that.
12-24-2017 , 08:56 PM
Brief political discussion with my aunt's mother taking up the anti-Trump stance against 4 deplorables. When she talked how badly Trump was ****ing NJ over with the tax plan, they were completely dismissive of it. Just complete denial. No way he'd do that. Let's wait and see what happens.", said my mother. Pretty civil and short.

Family gathering has been good and I am grateful aside from mother's boyfriend garden variety racism, this time towards Chinese people. He seems to think that they hate all non-Chinese people. Hasn't dawned on him that they only hate him and people like him.
12-25-2017 , 11:19 AM
No political xmas talk yesterday from my family, mainly because my brother and sister in law know better than to start up with that ****

Expecting lots of trump/gop bashing with my gf's fam today

All things considered, ive got it pretty ****ing good

If you bring the heat in real life like you do on the forum, please start videotaping your interactions. Has to be incredible stuff.
