Maybe I'm a little paranoid, but I feeling it's time to start slowly building an arsenal for the moment when we have to pack up our RV and run into the hills to get away from the gestapo. We're both veterans, we know how to use them.
I've made no effort to hide my left-wing sensibilities, my neighbors all see my yard signs for democrats. I'm all for gun control, but for now, might as well exercise my NRA-given right to accumulate a variety of weapons. The right wingers aren't gonna be the ones needing protection from the government...we are.
Be safe first and foremost. If you get a weapon, be super discreet about it. As others have mentioned, that can be a reason for state agents to do harm to you.
Everyone needs to get some basic security training. There are cops and feds infilitrating organizations that seem super innocuous to us like the DSA or Black Lives Matter. You need to be very careful about these kinds of people in your org and at the same time we need to be willing to connect with other people through grassroots organizations.
Often times cops will be the ones to try to provoke a violent outburst at the corporations or state or right wing agitators, and they will do this to naive newcomers to organizing. Be aware of these cops and don't go for weird adventurism that can get you and your comrades killed or in deep trouble.
Learning how to defend yourself and your communities is going to be critical. I believe we will have a responsibility soon to defend our marginalized friends and neighbors. In fact we already do. Whatever you decide to use, martial arts, physical fitness, firearms training, make sure to get good solid training and practice while you still can. I wouldn't be surprised if a real Left movement is the one thing that could convince Republicans to enact widespread gun control legislation in the future.
