School officials initially denied that students were required to read the Bible as punishment. But they later told investigators it was true, adding that they handed down the punishment not to promote a religion but “to assist students in understanding the effects of certain behaviors.”

A Florida man was arrested on Wednesday after he reportedly attacked two men he believed to be Muslim or Middle Eastern with a stun gun and told them they didn’t “deserve” to eat at McDonald’s.

John Jay Smith, 60, got into a verbal altercation with the men before menacing them with a knife and later the stun gun, First Coast News reported. One of the men is an exchange student from Egypt.

The pair were eating hamburgers in an Augustine, Fla., McDonald's parking lot on Wednesday.

Smith reportedly approached them holding a switchblade-style knife.
“Get the f--- out of here, you don’t deserve American food,” one of the victims claimed Smith said.

Smith then allegedly pulled out a stun gun, calling it his “zapper,” and reached inside the car in an attempt stun one of them, the outlet reported.

This article is pretty nuts and yes I know that the rally happened before Trump won the election but I would bet the Trump presidency has helped embolden far-right groups and the police that side with them

Stabbed at a neo-Nazi rally, called a criminal: how police targeted a black activist

Quote:
But the police did not treat O’Bannon like a victim. Records obtained by the Guardian reveal that officers instead monitored his Facebook page and sought to bring six charges against him, including conspiracy, rioting, assault and unlawful assembly. His presence at the protest – along with his use of the black power fist and “social media posts expressing his ideals” – were proof that he had violated the rights of neo-Nazis at the 26 June 2016 protests, police wrote in a report.

None of the white supremacists have been charged for stabbing O’Bannon.

...

When he eventually got his property back, he said, the card was empty, leading him to suspect police wiped it. Police denied erasing the footage.

But O’Bannon, who spent two weeks in the hospital, soon had other reasons to be suspicious of the police. When the California Highway Patrol (CHP) investigator Donovan Ayres called him months later as part of the investigation, the officer asked a series of questions about the anti-fascist activists and their supporters – and seemed much less interested in O’Bannon’s attack.

...

At one point on the call, Ayres said the TWP men had likely stabbed O’Bannon because they thought his camera rig was a weapon: “I kind of get why they may have perceived you as a threat.”

...

Ayres further used numerous Facebook photos of O’Bannon raising a black power fist alongside two other black men stabbed in Sacramento to argue that the images revealed their “support for anti-racist activism” and motives to impede the rights of Nazis.

...

Michael German, a former FBI agent, said the Sacramento case was part of a pattern of police in the US siding with far-right groups and targeting their critics. “They have been trained to look into these counter-protesters as if they are the primary threat.”

Statistics, noted German, who is a fellow with the Brennan Center for Justice’s liberty and national security program, show that white supremacists are a danger, adding that this strategy “seems to give state sanctions to these groups that are hyper violent … empowering groups that kill.”

Candace Owens doesn't know how to speak ironically.

Today's Ezra Klein show has a good episode about the racial wealth gap with the author of a well-received book, "The Color of Money."

JFC! I thought pilots were supposed to be educated and such.
05-29-2018 , 12:06 AM
The dumbest person over 20 that I've ever met was a pilot
05-29-2018 , 02:28 AM
I've been traveling with 3 pilots for a bit. Stubbornness seems to be the defining characteristic.

Kinda funny hearing stories about another pilot who likes to take pictures of his balls on people's faces when they pass out drunk. Imagine that next time you hear your pilot's voice over the intercom.
05-29-2018 , 07:15 AM
Im guessing the aircraft these pilots had access to weren't capable of trans pacific flight either.
05-29-2018 , 07:39 AM
I have/had a client (no active matters) who is a transpacific pilot flying the big planes for a major airline. He started commercial work, I think, around the 80s after getting out of the air force. He seemed pretty average in intelligence, but good general disposition. You don't necessarily want your pilot thinking too much. Follow procedures, stay calm under pressure, have a sense of responsibility, and perform consistently. Obv have to know the navigation and instruments and such. I'm sure they need to think out of the box sometimes, but I'd prefer they remain in the next larger box.

I have two friends who are pilots, one very smart, the other I guess average or just not too curious or intellectual anyway. One of my brothers went to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The school is a mix of engineering and pilots. The engineers at least joke about the pilots all being dumb.

Not so shocking development: Roseanne went full racist, reboot of her show now canceled.

I doubt pilots are more intelligent than any other white collar profession. They receive a lot of specialized training and are required to get recertified frequently (they go to school twice a year) but most of what they do is pretty boring and routine. My dad flies corporate jets (think Gulfstreams and similar aircraft), he is very good at mechanical stuff and fixing/building just about anything you could think of but he is certainly not what I would call book smart.

Yeah they're not designing the planes guys just flying them. It's not a job I would imagine you need a load of smarts to be good at.

I think the variance in average intelligence by profession is quite low.

The perks are insane. They fly free everywhere and can designate 2 others to fly free. Then family gets a huge discount. And they get massive discounts and points on hotel rooms. The world is a very small place to these guys.

Drunk black guy shot by white cops at fault for playing music in his garage. Jury awards his estate 4 cents. Judge says "LOL juries" and reduces it to nothing.

Because jurors also found that the sheriff’s office was only 1 percent at fault in the death, that award was reduced to four cents. And furthermore, because jurors found that Mr. Hill was intoxicated and mostly to blame for the shooting, a lawyer for his family said Tuesday that a judge would reduce the four-cent award to nothing.

Wait so being drunk is now grounds for getting shot by the police?
05-31-2018 , 05:26 PM
Doing absolutely anything at all is grounds for getting shot by the police.
