I don't care which side you agree with. It doesn't matter. If we can escape a Trump presidency with ONLY violent protests and even more violent suppression of them we will have dodged a bullet. There is absolutely no plausible story you can tell me for national stability in the near future.

Jesus man, I think you're having a breakdown or something. Watch a good comedy and forget about all of this for at least tonight, seriously.

Re: Trump Presidency Predictions Thread

I'm most fearful about a breakdown of the post-WW2 international order. First, you have Brexit and then the election of Trump. Then in France and other European countries you get similar right-wing governments. Trump abandons NATO which leads Russia to invading Ukraine and meddling in other eastern European countries, as well as continual mideast meddling. In Asia, Japan and South Korea build up armies and SK get nuclear weapons. Trump abandons the nuke deal with Iran and they arm themselves and turn the cold war with Saudi Arabia hot by escalating in Syria and other places. The US also abandons Iraq and Afghanistan which leads to terrorism and further Iranian/Saudi conflict. I mean the list goes on of what could happen if "America First" becomes official policy of the US.

Tell me a plausible bedtime story then. Make me feel better about Trump's America.

I liked the analogy and feel that it's the most likely outcome. The gloom-and-doom spouted here is a realistic possibility but I am optimistic that people will have enough control over him now that things are going to get serious.

Freakonomics had a podcast episode on how the President really isn't as powerful as we think. Perhaps the monies behind him do the talking and acting. As for mutually assured destruction via nukes, rich people can't be rich if they're dead.

The presidency, by itself, isn't as powerful as we think. However, with a pliant senate, house and supreme court, as well as a mandate from the masses, it can be pretty powerful.

Re: Trump Presidency Predictions Thread

They aren't going to outright rig the vote. If that could easily be done then Trump would've never been the nom. They'll just continue to push suppression legislation to build safe majorities in more states.

Pennsylvania is starting to look mighty red, and it had gone blue since 88. This could be a big prize for the GOP, and they run unopposed in the rural, western half of the state. My state senate seat race was unopposed.

Please no more nutters in the primaries tho, kplzandthnx GOP.

Also with a Rasputin like Bannon actually running the show...

No way he acquiesces to Pence.

Imagining Burlesconi in charge of the world's largest economy and military doesn't make me feel even a little bit better.

I'm banking on Trump being unable to compromise enough to get anything he proposed earlier done. He's simply too inflexible and narcissistic to allow anybody to tell him that his plan is not good or that there could be another way to do it. RINOs and Dems will do enough to block any enormous changes.

How many people will want to be on Trump's enemies list by opposing him?

The notion that any pretense of restraint from our surveillance or law enforcement apparatus may soon be dropped to cheers from the crowd is scaring the ****ing **** out of me right now.

Going with serious antagonizing with the Chinese, far improved relations with Russia, and probably way less change domestically than anyone thinks with regards to social issues.

Obviously corporations and the rich gonna make out like bandits (which is ironic).

fwiw, this seems to me like the best case scenario for America now. I get it that 4 years of full GOP power will have terrible results, but they are all reversible (maybe except Climate stuff. We're doomed there).

If Trump ends up behaving just like the GOP wants him to, you guys dodged a huge ****ing bullet. And if that happens, I wouldn't gloat at the 'f the system' voters. Just be happy you still have a republic.

OK board liberals I'm not white and I'm sick of this. I didn't vote for trump but I m not staring at the ceiling terrified that he won. Unless you are A. Undocumented brown (in which case I feel for u) or B. Muslim brown (also have my sympathies given the current political climate.) there is no reason to think the impending trump admin threatens anything that can't be remedied by not being lazy and going to vote. The teeth gnashing about the safety of nonwhites is borderline hilarious, especially considering it's mostly coming from well to do White's like mrwookie, suz, Dvaut etc.

He brags continuously about his ability to strike deals, so I don't think compromise will be a huge issue in most cases. I really believe he's scared ****less right now and will look for help and advice from wherever he can find it. As such he could be easily manipulated. This is already apparent in his unexplainable affection for Putin and Russia. He was also timid when meeting the Mexican president after talking tough.

If he's around long enough to get comfortable with the job, then I think he could be a terror. But for now, he's deathly afraid of failure, and with his short attention span, he will be willing to agree to just about anything that he thinks will help him retain his popularity.

That doesn't make me feel any better either. The things that made him popular are horrible.
