It is a city in Rohrbacher's district, not that that's super important, but the city is a well known deplorable stronghold. An incident took place at the local high school where a black student was sent a bunch of angry emojis and the n word repeated multiple times.
The parent went to the principal, the student who sent the message admitted to sending it, and no disciplinary action was taken towards the student.
The parent posts the original message and explained the scenario. What happened next I did not expect:
200+ original comments so far (not including sub-discussions) of almost pure outrage. The usual pure deplorables are of course completely silent, but there are a few who I would have previously categorized as "pure" deplorables that are completely incensed by the situation. One guy who I would have even categorized as super-deplorable went so far as to look up the relevant school codes, contact information for various administration officials for the district, and has been very active in making phone calls and emails and is helping the parent elevate the issue to the next level.
Out of the 200 comments, I could only find about half a dozen soft, whimpering defenses of the original hate message. Mostly in the vein of - "Wow you contacted authorities and the principal, why dont you be a REAL PARENT and talk to the kid's parents instead!" and concern trolling stuff like "Well, how do we know this actually happened and isn't a false accusation?"
The tone of the FB group is so typically bad I thought it would be mostly those types of messages but they were in the far, far minority. This gave me a bit of hope - that maybe some percentage of these remaining deplorables are truly hoodwinked or so blinded by librul hatred that they are willing to sacrifice their own morals to support a party that says they will achieve whatever their pet issue is. I know this is damning as hell and doesn't speak well to their character at all, but previously the viewpoint I had on the remaining ~30% of the country still in support of trump were they were mostly frothing out the mouth white supremacist types. From what I've been reading on this post, that just simply isn't true.
anyway, a dumb take from me I'm sure, but something I was encouraged by reading today.
to drill down on chesspain's point, is the black student popular and friends with that parents kids? is he a good athlete, or involved in some other notable extracurriculars? I would bet my life that he is not some downtrodden kid stuck in remedial classes tucked away out of sight.
they are not helping him out of some sense of fairness, its bc he means something to them personally.
