Thoughts? Just a republican shill or are the points valid and likely outcomes of more government regulation of the internet?

Nope, shill was correct

So you also disagree with the basic content of the memo? Or do you just disregard it because it was written by someone you see as a shill (an accusation I am not disputing)?

I guess the generic talking points of his you are referring to are something like this:

Gov's plan to regulate X will increase consumer cost of X.

Gov's plan to regulate X will mean worse quality X for American consumers.

Gov's plan to regulate X will hurt competition and innovation and move us toward a monopoly.

The American people are being misled about what the government's plans are to regulate X.

Is that a fair summation? Do you take issue with all of those statements or just some?

These three are clearly bull**** fear-mongering fed directly to his corporate-shilling brain by monied interests.

The last one is up in the air afaik because I don't know how much info that is being proposed is publicly available. Most transparent administration ever and all that.

Just out of curiosity, do you think those corporations you referenced have much of a role in writing the actual content of the 300 pages of regulations?

As for most transparent administration ever. Yes, I agree. It's amazing something like this can't even be public.

Seems pretty spot on. The idea that the government getting involved in the internet will turn out differently than every other time the government has gotten into an industry like this is a fairy tale.

The entire reason that we have the problems that we have today in the broadband industry is because the government got involved. I don't know how people think getting the government more involved is going to solve the problem.

Number 3 that you quoted that you say is "up in the air" is what dictates most of 1 and 2. Putting extra taxes aside, less competition and innovation gives consumers worse products at higher prices.

itt we're still pretending that there is "competition" for high speed internet

I don't think anyone here is under that illusion.

So pretty much cliffs...

The real issue is that ISPs pay to exclusively use the infrastructure the utilities create and this is what allows for the monopoly. If these deals didn't happen and comp was opened up, the market could potentially sort this out.

Opposition to this would be
1. Big ISP, like monopoly
1. Utilities, like exclusive deals with big ISP

Pretty much what I took from the article

CNBC has an article titled with the click bait headline "Ex-FCC chief shocked by Obama's net meddling". Of course if you read the article it basically just says Obama is for net neutrality.

Ex-FCC chief shocked by Obama net rules meddling

Quote:
"This issue is ripe for Congress to fix," said Powell, current president of the National Cable and Telecommunications Association. As the principal trade association for the cable industry, the association represents Comcast, parent company of CNBC.
Whenever the cable and telecom industry is bitching about something, you know it's going to be a good deal for the American consumer. It's disgusting how this article, at least the headline, was obviously bought and paid for by an industry group.

Step 1: Hire away the ex-commissioner of the FCC to represent your lobbyist group. I'm sure this possibility was never discussed *while* he was commissioner of the FCC.

Step 2: Get him to go on CNBC and trash current FCC plan.

Step 3: Somehow get CNBC.com to create a clickbait headline that has very little to do with the actual article, but is guaranteed to rile up anyone who doesn't like Obama. http://www.cnbc.com/id/102450337

Step 4: Link the article on the top page of drudge, along with a bunch of other articles bashing net neutrality. I wonder how much those cost? Is this really a hot-button issue for conservatives?

Step 5: Sit back and watch as dozens of unpaid internet trolls come over from drudge to gunk up the otherwise usually fairly sober CNBC.com comment stream (read the comments on the article).

Chiefsplanet is all riled up about net neutrality today even though their level of understanding on it is basically zero. Awesome.

Yeah, with this and the climate change denial revelation, we're getting a good glimpse of the conservative ideals of corporatocracy. Businesses should control government, truth belongs to the highest bidder, etc

Republican resistance has ended for the FCC's plans to regulate the internet as a public utility. FCC commissioners are working out the final details, and they're expected to approve the plan themselves on Thursday. "The F.C.C. plan would let the agency regulate Internet access as if it is a public good.... In addition, it would ban the intentional slowing of the Internet for companies that refuse to pay broadband providers. The plan would also give the F.C.C. the power to step in if unforeseen impediments are thrown up by the handful of giant companies that run many of the country's broadband and wireless networks." Dave Steer of the Mozilla Foundation said, "We've been outspent, outlobbied. We were going up against the second-biggest corporate lobby in D.C., and it looks like we've won."

Man, that NYT article sure has a lot of self-congratulatory BS from victorious lobbyists for giant corporations talking about how this shows that lobbyists for giant corporations don't pull all the strings.

Quote:
The Federal Communications Commission today voted to preempt state laws in North Carolina and Tennessee that prevent municipal broadband providers from expanding outside their territories.

The action is a year in the making. FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler announced in February 2014 his intention to override state laws designed to protect private cable companies and telcos from public sector competition. Wheeler took his cue from the federal appeals court rulingthat overturned net neutrality rules; tucked away in that decision was one judge's opinion that the FCC has the authority to preempt "state laws that prohibit municipalities from creating their own broadband infrastructure to compete against private companies."

Nineteen states have such laws, often passed at the behest of private Internet service providers that didn't want to face competition. Communities in two of the states asked the FCC to take action. The City of Wilson, North Carolina and the Electric Power Board (EPB) of Chattanooga, Tennessee filed the petitions that led to today's FCC action. Each offers broadband service to residents and received requests for service from people in nearby towns, but they alleged that state laws made it difficult or impossible for them to expand.
Additionally, states can no longer ban cities from setting up their own broadband networks.

Is broadband really slower in Europe than in USA#1? Every time I see a Euro post a Speedtest result it is much faster than anything I've ever gotten, especially upstream.

I would imagine how one defines "Europe" matters greatly.

Like 90% of the comments are complete bat**** crazy. I think most people didn't even read what the subject of the story was, they just saw Obama did something and then hilarity ensued.

No. Believe it or not right-wing media is lying by characterizing Europe as somehow worse than the US in an area where it clearly isn't. Crazy right?
