Without going into specifics, but this has already been addressed with "mixed bundling" drawn from game theory/price discrimination branch of economics.

FCC votes to kick the can down the road after they get some more "public opinion" on their two options. A) providers can provide fast lanes that are "commercially reasonable" (whatever that means) or B) they can ban paid prioritization online. Vox calls this a minor victory for NN, because until recent backlash they were just going to settle on option A.

they focus on the money but in reality it is about the content. they want more control over what you watch/read the same as they do with TV.

Netflix telling Verizon to go **** its mother

Hyman responded that it is "Verizon's responsibility to provide its customers with the service it has promised them... It is my understanding that Verizon actually upsells customers to higher speed packages based on improved access to video services, including Netflix. Verizon's unwillingness to augment its access ports to major Internet backbone providers is squarely Verizon's fault... To try to shift blame to us for performance issues arising from interconnection congestion is like blaming drivers on a bridge for traffic jams when you're the one who decided to leave three lanes closed during rush hour."

In b4 this is resolved with more blood money payouts a la Comcast

Really smart response by Netflix, they should push for more "truth in advertising" in regards to promised service speeds. Shouldn't be able to advertise 20 Meg Service or w/e then provide 2 on any sort of regular basis.

I expect this is part of a negotiation that will end with Netflix paying Verizon some sort of interconnection fee.

What's terrible about that chart is I have Cablevision. If they are at the top of the Netflix streaming speed spectrum I feel really incredibly sorry for those at the bottom. **** them all, hope Netflix keeps calling them out one by one.

So google going fiber, partly in response to non-compete laws for cable and DSL companies?

Keep in mind the graph isn't absolute speed, just change in speed over time. Cablevision could have been really bad to start with and just gotten a bit better.

The most infuriating part about all of this **** isn't that it's completely wrong and awful, it's that we can't do anything about it

Sprint unzips and takes a hot steamy piss on net neutrality.

Quote:
For about $12, Sprint Corp. S -3.00% will soon let subscribers buy a wireless plan that only connects to Facebook. FB +1.31%

For that same price, they could choose instead to connect only with Twitter, TWTR +19.98% Instagram or Pinterest—or for $10 more, enjoy unlimited use of all four. Another $5 gets them unlimited streaming of a music app of their choice.

The plan, offered under the company's Virgin Mobile brand of prepaid service, comes as wireless carriers are experimenting with ways to make wireless Internet access more affordable for the poorest consumers by offering special deals on slices of the Web.

In the process, however, they are testing the long-held principle that all Internet traffic should be treated equally by creating strong incentives for subscribers to use already dominant services.

Obama calls on the FCC to reclassify ISPs as telecommunications services, then they could enforce net neutrality.

As consumers, we don't have to accept this ****, we can boycott. Once net neutrality is gone and ISP's immediately start jacking up prices for open internet, hopefully libraries will still have free internet. I'll go to the library when I actually need to use the internet, I sure as hell won't give Comcast the satisfaction of paying double for the same internet I have now.

Lol, what?

Pretty good tweet, imo. His constituents will eat it up.

This is pretty solid timing. It will probably take a year or two for the FCC to come up with new regs, by which time Google Fiber will create actual competition and improve service, and Obama can steal all the credit.

Yea it's kind of sad. A lot of people will jump up to be against Net Neutrality without even knowing what it is because Obamacare. He's not dumb, he's pretty smart to say dumb things to dumb people.

I hate that people on my side of the aisle dismiss Ted Cruz as an idiot. He isn't. He knows exactly how to bait and manipulate people using fear and hatred. I wonder if he will be dumb enough to run for President though. He has no shot. He could however, be a thorn in the side of everybody by continuing to build a base of power in the Senate for years to come. He might be the most dangerous man in the Senate.

Glad to see Obama taking a public stand in favor of net neutrality.

Though avoiding the issue until after election and after appointing an anti neutrality industry lobbyist to head the FCC are pretty typical to Obama's style of governance. You have control of the freaking executive branch - it would have been a hell of a lot easier to just appoint someone to the FCC who was in favor of net neutrality to begin with!

Rather than pandering to big Hollywood and Telecom donors Obama and the Dems couldve had an easy win and easy PR victory on this issue. Instead they pull BS like this and wake up on the day after the elections and wonder why so few people see them as a credible alternative to the Republicans.

Me too. I'm a Republican and no fan of Obama but he's right on this one.

Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Charter stocks all plunged on the news.

All huge Democratic donors.

Would love to have been a fly on the wall of Comcast's executive office when the news came in.
11-10-2014 , 05:04 PM
Obama!

Doing one thing right!

I'm pretty shocked he's doing this. I thought for sure they were waiting until the story completely died.

Maybe the Dems are going to make this a huge 2016 issue now.

Either way, **** Comcast.

It's funny that Comcast has become such a lodestone of evil that you can virtually bet that anything that upsets it people will think is good, usually correctly.
