It's a generational thing. I fell for it with Clinton I. Knew better when Obama rolled around (but voted for him anyway, because what choice is there?).

Re: The Tragic Death of the Democratic Party

On socialism

Quote:
To recap: The most popular politician in the United States today is a socialist; the most admired American of the 20th century had a soft spot for socialism; and the most popular sport in the country is basically a “government-sanctioned socialist utopia.” So much for socialism, then, being somehow un-American or some sort of foreign import.

It is also worth noting that while the “s-word” may still bother a majority of Americans, especially older Americans, socialist policies are pretty popular across the board — including with plenty of Republicans. Writing for New York magazine’s Daily Intelligencer, and citing a poll from the Kaiser Family Foundation, Eric Levitz points out that “a majority of voters in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania would all support a socialist takeover of the health-insurance industry (so long as you didn’t put the idea to them in those terms).” He also observes that the “most radical economic policy on Ocasio-Cortez’s platform — a federal job guarantee — meanwhile, actually polls quite well in ‘flyover country.’

What a moron. It should be a goddamned universal law that if you lose your primary you are ****ing DONE til the next election cycle, also that you're not allowed to run in two races at once.

I get the feeling that it's not the GOP/Trump Party kind of owning the libs that's the issue, but that she prefers GOP style policy and would rather the Republican win. After a very quick look and some possibly unfounded assumptions it looks like the Dem Establishment feels the same way and is putting her on the ballot prematurely as she hasn't officially declared as no party affiliation and doesn't yet have the required signatures.

Did she run though? Seems like it's that her candidate, businessman David Blair (Fortune 500 company that sold services to health insurance companies - I think), lost.

Re: The Tragic Death of the Democratic Party

She didn't run. She's on the county council. She's term limited in that role so there was really nothing stopping her from running for executive but she passed on the primary. Probably to avoid splitting votes with the other business shill who went on to lose. Splitting votes with the progressive candidate is apparently fine though. She's unofficially cleared the legal hurdles to getting on the ballot as an independent so it's probably happening. FWIW Elrich is still a strong favorite. I'm currently registered here and I'll be voting for him.

Re: The Tragic Death of the Democratic Party

Similar to the Elrich-Floreen controversy only on the national level and somehow even scummier: Joe Crowley is apparently still allowed on the ballot because of some group that endorsed him before the primary, even though they have now put their support behind Ocasio-Cortez. Crowley needs to agree to give up the endorsement though, which he's not doing.

If Floreen and Crowley end up pulling their bull**** and it results in suboptimal results I think the Democratic Party deserves its fate.

- We elect limp dick olds to leadership positions while the GOP has Mitch who basically eviscerates Dems like it's nothing.

- While GOP voters fall in line we rely on pretty much every demographic that can't get their ****ing ass to the poll or register on time.

- We have a large contingent in the party that is basically Republican-lite/corporate whores and actively fight against the main tenets of what makes a Democrat a Democrat. We either have bigots who love the New Deal or SJWs who hate high taxes.

- We are fighting an opponent who is not afraid to be themselves and fight tooth and nail for what they want while Dems are like a fat kid afraid to take their shirt off the beach. "It's okay honey the people really want single payer health insurance, you can take your shirt off now." "Nooooo, not yet mom, they're not ready for it yet!"

- Do Dems have anyone in Congress who has balls and can talk **** well? Enough of this "Mr. President, how darrreeeese you!" pseudo-outrage. How about, "hey you filthy fat philandering ****..." Get in the pit and rub his nose in his own ****. Call the GOP out on how many neo Nazis are running for Congress under their banner. Call Reagan a senile old who was controlled by the wealthy. Call out how many pedos are in the GOP these days.
GOP call us Godless baby-killing communists so they get to paint us and control the narrative. Dems need to start acting and stop reacting.

the ppl that pull the bs wont be hurt. it wont be their "fate". they will keep their positions and it will be the progressives and country as a whole that suffers.

Re: The Tragic Death of the Democratic Party

" We elect limp dick olds to leadership positions while the GOP has Mitch who basically eviscerates Dems like it's nothing."

It ain't like Mitch is a young fierce tiger type - more like a hammerhead shark. But your point is well taken. It's like watching a kindergartner lose his lunch money day after day after day.....

"While GOP voters fall in line we rely on pretty much every demographic that can't get their ****ing ass to the poll or register on time."

I've noted before one of the (few) benefits to being old is that you get to see the same thing over and over again. The dems were going to change the world with the young vote in 1972. McGovern won one state - partially because turnout sucked, partially because he shot himself in the foot over and over again. And partially because the dem establishment were fine with Nixon winning as long as they kept their 6-figure bull**** jobs in DC. The dem establishment did less than nothing to help McGovern, and gave us the most venal scumbag president ever.

As long as Schumer, Pelosi and Feinstein are the heavy hitters, it's tough to see things improving. It isn't like THEY lose anything if the GOP rolls the dems again - they're locked in to their cushy spots. The best hope is that Trump continues to be so repulsive/incompetent that he dampens turnout enough on the right and gins up turnout on the left to flip Congress. He is capable of doing that, hopefully....
