Re: The Tragic Death of the Democratic Party

If anyone doesn't get what I'm talking about, check out this astonishing statement from Bernie:

Quote:
“Donald Trump tapped into the anger of a declining middle class that is sick and tired of establishment economics, establishment politics and the establishment media. People are tired of working longer hours for lower wages, of seeing decent paying jobs go to China and other low-wage countries, of billionaires not paying any federal income taxes and of not being able to afford a college education for their kids - all while the very rich become much richer.

“To the degree that Mr. Trump is serious about pursuing policies that improve the lives of working families in this country, I and other progressives are prepared to work with him. To the degree that he pursues racist, sexist, xenophobic and anti-environment policies, we will vigorously oppose him.”

As the demographics move further away from a white majority and the country becomes more educated, the Democratic Party will make a comeback. This is simply a bump in the road. GOP supporters are due to die soon anyway

I saw on CNN pundits talking about Tim Kaine being next in line, LMAO. You want 4 more years of Trump?
In 4 years Tulsi Gabbard will still be relatively inexperienced for POTUS, but not that much different than Obama in 2008 trading some lawyering for soldiering.

I wonder if you might be a little more concerned if you still lived here.

It's not that they are dying off, it's that white people without college degrees are going to be a shrinking percentage of the population going forward.

LOL at the old people dying off and that causing things to change. People tend to get more conservative as they get older, so all these liberal millennials will change a lot over the next 40 years. Don't forget that all of these boomers everyone here hates so much and likes to accuse of being racist were flower children back in the 60's.

I think you're overstating things. It's hard to define 'benefited' but if "cheaper things" is your only metric, then yes. But people also like having jobs. having a productive output is a huge source of happiness and a contributes to a feeling of individual purpose. the labor participation rate has plummeted over time. (for males, granted. but that needs to be considered given female participation has fortunately skyrocketed over the decades.). generally happiness has remained stable over time. It's not as simple as cheap chinese production = good.

Unemployment overall is low. Underemployment is a much bigger issue, but any of the remedies (income subsidies) aren't going to be remotely feasible now.

idk if you can get the same CNN i get right now, but we have live coverage of protests all over the country with Van Jones pleading with the Trump surrogates to at least try to assuage the fears of people who feel threatened by a Trump presidency, and the Trump surrogates are saying, "lol no. Those wannabe 60's protesters can go **** themselves. You're the real racist."

I'm telling you, it's going to get really ****ing ugly over here in 2017.

Trump rode in with a mandate from the people:

Stop protecting the environment
Build that wall
Round up 10m illegals
Put all Muslims on a list
Repeal obamacare
Conservative judge so that abortion is illegal
Lower taxes for the wealthy

This is what the rural poor are onboard for!

Again - these might have been the rust belt swing voters that made the difference. But my Boomer family, the alt-right/RWers on here, every other conservative I know, and 95% of the slappies on chiefsplanet are very comfortable in every aspect of their lives except their waistbands.

I voted for Bernie in the primaries but this election ain't clinton's fault, it's the electorate's fault.

Not if the GOP can suppress the votes.

No they weren't. They were apolitical. Most of the flower children have stayed liberal. Numerous studies have shown that once you identify strongly politically you tend to stay that way (obviously with exceptions).

Boomers were just too self-absorbed and entitled to start caring about politics until late in life.

This actually gives me a hope for the future, with the generation of millennials that Bernie woke up.

And Gen-X has also largely already identified politically by now. I will grant you that a lot of them weren't though, and I see them turning conservative on FB before my eyes. It's almost like if liberalism doesn't hit you before 35, conservatism creeps in.

Re: The Tragic Death of the Democratic Party

I'm curious whether this turns into the same as the other party where the far side of it starts dictating every nominee from now on. I believe Bern can't win a general, GOP apparently has a video on him saying stuff that people consider much worse than grabbing women. Also, they get at least 2 more years of suppressing more votes, they're gonna take advantage.

White people will become a smaller percent but I worry that those left behind will grow. A college degree from state u will get you the same crappy service job a high school degree will get you today. I think only the truly gifted will be meaningfully employed as technology advances.

It's not like the far right candidate like Cruz won the GOP nomination. The establishment was repudiated and a populist won. The parties are realigning and its not going to be ideology that divides it's going to be the winners and losers of globalization. I think the Democratic party will see a realignment too. The Obama coalition can not be rebuilt.

Normally, protests are supposed to make a difference by forcing change. Do they want a fresh election or something? I suppose protesting is a pretty cathartic way of expressing your frustration with this shocking upset but it's otherwise pointless.

This protest stuff is all gonna blow over in a few months. Like every other change, people will fight it at first but then accept that they can do nothing about it and live their lives.
