Has Mexico ever made any type of public statement regarding paying for this wall?

They have made a statement but unfortunately they speak some crazy language that nobody can understand.

I was wrong about libertarian (although in my defense it's been awhile since I've checked). My point was that the size of a subreddit is pretty meaningless for determining the popularity of political affiliations.
For young people it's relevant

If upper middleclass kids have fully subsidized college education, things are even worse than I thought.

From what I gather from a page of google results, Mexico's high-level officials don't want to get into it with Trump at this stage in the electoral process. Even the former president tried to be diplomatic and tried to respond to Trump's claims with 'facts' or something. About the most noise that's been made is that the ambassador to the US demanded an apology from Trump, but that was for a Mexican audience; I doubt Trump even noticed.

Fwiw, this doesn't mean that middle class kids receive exactly the same benefits from the system. While university access is essentially free for everyone, there are additional subsidies for students of low income families to cover their living expenses. [Not sure if this is exactly the same in Germany though.]

At this point it feels like he just looking for something to hate on "Ohh you pay so much taxes for it", "ohh you even benefit yourself from it even though you pay so much taxes that's even worse"

Like plexiq says there are other things, like Bafög, which is basically a loan but without interest and if you pay it back early you can get something like up to 50% discount. I'm not too familar with it so I can't tell you exactly how it works, but if your parents earn too much you can't apply for it.

I think it's pretty hilarious that the country chytry wants to criticize for their damaging social programs is... Germany. I mean, aren't you guys carrying like half the European economy on your back without breaking a sweat?

I'm pretty sure the reddit vote is limited to mashing internet polls and being asshats on Twitter

yeah. and when you consider it really wasn't that long ago that the west german economy had to absorb the east german economy, it makes it all the more impressive.

if Trump stopped talking about immigration and the racial stuff tied with that.

he actually isnt a bad candidiate and is moderate as ****, call it as it is, hes prolly more of a democrat than repub but his chances on the repub side are better.

Look at it this way, if it was anyone else but trump and the candidate wasn't spewing that racial BS. He wouldn't be getting as much attention but would be a candidate i would strongly be interested in

LOL this dude is just blown away that Germans aren't in the Tea Party.

Germany also has strong union protections, chytry. Basically Western Europe exists as a test case to prove that conservatives have no ****ing idea what they are talking about.

That's tough to swallow, I know, you've been told that taxes are evil and handouts make people lazy your whole life but now you're being confronted with actual Germans.

This also puts them in a very weird spot where they have to say that America is better than the Western European countries, which is weird because of Obama's socialism destroying the economy and The Chicago Guys fixing the numbers and whatever.

This reminded me, too - ~25 years ago West Germany bailed out the entire country of East Germany. And it worked! But god forbid we make Puerto Rico a state, did you know they have a negative balance?

This NYT article from October (I thought I'd posted it before but can't find it) had some thoughts from some Germans looking back on reunification, and I thought this quote was interesting:

Quote:
Mr. Krämer [economist @ Commerzbank], 49: I looked at East German data in the 1990s, and saw that the amount spent was double the region’s income. Every second mark came from the West; the firms basically hardly made money. Poland and the Czech Republic relied on their own strength. No one gave them an extra mark for every one they earned. They were poorer, but tackled their own development.
Brutal for the rest of Eastern Europe.
