let's be decent to each other, it ain't that hard.

“I’m nice because, when I was growing up, so many people weren’t nice to me, and I remember how that felt. And I don’t want to make anyone else feel like that. I value nice.”

Mason and Mat have been kicking around this idea since at least last February. The stated reason is ldo ridiculous. The forum has always been highly argumentative and full of insults, but in the past they tended to be about abstract political concepts more than real world events. Most of 2+2 is full of people arguing with and insulting one another. People have heated disagreements about freakin' TV shows and food. If you want to find personal attacks and character assassinations, OOT is miles worse than anything that has ever happened here. The Politics forum has always been held to much harsher standards than other parts of 2+2.

I think it is not a coincidence that this happens when Trump is having a Very Bad Week and his future looks dubious.

people who elect literally racist game show hosts as president aren't worthy of respect and never will be

If you add "Be decent to each other" to the current politics rules and then actually enforce those rules then that would solve most if not all of the issues. Those rules were designed to foster debate and discussion and they worked well. But most of the people in the forum currently value vitriol over all and that's why the forum is the way it is.

Unfortunately, a private subreddit would decline over time. At least this forum occasionally gets new blood and some former posters return to the fray. As a matter of public policy, any new policy that requires people to affirmatively do something is likely to fail.

I see keeeeeeeeeed still enjoys licking jackboots.

the worlds trump supporters will be along anytime to defend our right to free speech any minute now.......right?

I'd be curious to see how much money would be lost in ad revenue if politics was closed.

Hi Mason,

I think grounding this discussion in some particulars would be more productive. Could you please give some examples of posts that you find problematic?

The coming poker boom will pay for it.

It is difficult for me to believe that the motivation for this is not mostly due to just not appreciating the political point of view of most of the posters

Shouldn't Mason have asked catface how good he was at math homework before zapping him?
01-18-2019 , 07:46 PM
Catface was a solid poster who brought a lot of legal knowledge to the table. Pretty sad if the mods here don't lobby to have him brought back.
01-18-2019 , 07:47 PM
Wait Mason banned him? Didn't show in Tapatalk. LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

+1 to this. #FreeCatface

When did this forum not value vitriol? I remember the tail end of the ACist days, they were not full of nice people having nice disagreements.

Politics can be a great subject as long as each of us respects the other person even if they present views that we don’t agree with. However, that ceased happening on this forum long ago.
What did the moderators say when you brought this to their attention in the mod forum?

And keeeeeeeeeeed isn't exactly innocent, in this subforum as well as others on 2+2.

I will if we still have a forum.
01-18-2019 , 07:53 PM
Yeah, snap banning catface for that is not a good sign for how this will go.

Mason, when Mat asked me about this last year I told him I thought a heavy handed approach was likely to blow up in your face. You seem to be heading in that direction far quicker than I would have expected.

I agree with this sentiment. I'll have no reason to frequent 2p2.

All,

I will be moderating this thread heavily. No personal attacks against Mason or anyone else.

Very odd timing. I haven't noticed any more vitriol than normal, and certainly a ton less than when P7 and P8.8 were open.

I find the Trump threads offer a very useful summary of the nonsense going on in the WH, and the Brexit thread is good for calibrating one's racism meter.

FWIW, I'm all for making the place more civil and tightening up on personal attacks and trolling in an even-handed fashion. Spite-banning valued posters isn't a great way to get people to go all with this, though.
