What a heel move by Hakuho! Cheering for Kakuryu to win this; he's not out of the race yet.

I'm pretty skeptical about grand unified social/political/philosophical theories because the arguments never seem to go anywhere and there doesn't seem to be any real way of keeping track of what the **** you're even talking about much less a systematic way of testing and improving them so most of the time I feel like Jesus this is bull****. Put ticketmaster up there in the pure evil power rankings. https://consequenceofsound.net/2018/...alper-program/

Quote:
On paper, Ticketmaster has long opposed ticket scalping. In the terms and conditions on its website, the Live Nation subsidiary clearly indicates ticket limits for buyers, and the company even has gone so far as to sue online ticket brokers like Prestige Entertainment for allegedly using bot software. In an interesting turn of events, however, it appears that Ticketmaster has had its own pockets in the scalping business all along.
Quote:
According to the undercover report, not only is Ticketmaster recruiting these scalpers into its secret program, but it is also actively turning a blind eye to actions that violate the company’s own terms of service. The Toronto Star writes that scalpers face little to no consequences when it comes to the ticket buying process, such as when they initially purchase beyond the stated ticket limit:

“If we identify breaches of these limits … we reserve the right to cancel any such orders,” read Ticketmaster’s general terms and conditions. “Use of automated means to purchase tickets is strictly prohibited.”

But ticket resellers who break those rules have no reason to be concerned, the sales executive reassured. A blind eye will be turned.

“We don’t spend any time looking at your Ticketmaster.com account. I don’t care what you buy. It doesn’t matter to me,” said the Trade Desk sales executive. “There’s total separation between Ticketmaster and our division. It’s church and state … We don’t monitor that at all.”

This isn’t the first time Ticketmaster has come under fire for supposedly being in bed with scalpers. When Prestige Entertainment was sued by Ticketmaster last October, the online ticket broker shot back with counterclaims of its own. Its main argument was that Ticketmaster was itself guilty of trying to game the ticket buying system.

“However, TM fails to mention that, on information and belief, many tickets for each show of Hamilton were in fact never placed onto the primary ticket exchange, but went directly to the secondary ticket market for resale at significantly higher prices,” Prestige commented in a statement.

We had this in the UK and we shut those ****ers down

Ticketmaster UK is shutting down its resale websites Get Me In and Seatwave and instead launching a new fan-to-fan ticket exchange to let customers sell tickets that can no longer be used.

A couple years ago I wanted to take my father to a Patriots game so I set up a Ticketmaster account and was ready to go for 9:00 AM the morning they went on sale. I had a list of games in mind, seating areas I wanted, backups choices, and backups to the backup choices. Within 30 seconds of the tickets going on sale they were 98% sold out and there weren't two adjacent seats available for any game in the stadium all season. If you want to go to an NFL game and you don't have connections, your only option is 3rd party brokers selling at 3-10x face value.

Along those lines, there was a huge front page WSJ story the other day about hospital pricing power (shocker: they are scumbags). There seems to be significant insurance company collusion happening but I was too enraged to finish the article.
09-20-2018 , 02:20 PM
Right - the insurance companies can just charge higher rates - so their incentive isn't exactly aligned with the consumer.

I was thinking - you know how we force drugmakers to list every single negative side effect in every ad? Why not make them list the price too?

At the pharmacy: "Sir we're not sure if your insurance will cover this. I can call them but it might take a while."

"Ok well how much is it w/o insurance?"

(long pause)

"I'll have to look that up."

Wtf - it's a thing you sell. Why is the price like pulling teeth to find out? Every pharmacy and hospital should be forced to publish their prices imo.

In CA we have nutrition facts next to every food item on every menu, but we have zero idea how much anything medical-related costs. And they look at you like you're an animal if you even ask.

They need to know how much you can pay before they can tell you how much it costs...
09-20-2018 , 02:47 PM
The best is the drug maker “coupons” for...exactly your copay.

I have no idea what “pharmacy benefit managers” are but they are getting a lot of press and are obviously making tons of money so I’m sure it’s just another layer of infuriating cost inflating nonsense.

I'm encouraging students to register to vote. One student asks how to do it. I explain. Hmm, he says, maybe he'll do it when it's important in 2020. Murca.
09-20-2018 , 04:30 PM
Ridiculous.

I received a registration form from the Scottish government to vote about a week after moving into a flat in Scotland. I filled it out, mailed it in and was registered to vote. Anytime there's an election, I receive my ballot to fill out by post and mail it back.

It is not difficult to do and should be an option for every American citizen.

According to an article that accompanied the main piece, wrt the Bruno Mars show in Toronto
Quote:
The investigation, which analyzed the box office seven times in the first hour of sales, found fewer than half of the seats in the arena for sale. In eight sections, not a single ticket was put on sale. But 90 minutes later, these tickets trickled out in pairs and rows. These seats are known as “hold-backs” and effectively throttle the supply of tickets in the opening moments when demand is highest.

“They do this for most shows [not sure if they do it for sports]. It’s standard practice,” said Ervil DiGiusto, a professional ticket broker who closely monitors the sales on Ticketmaster’s website. “They have complete rows but they don’t put them up all at once,” he said. “If (a fan) only sees a few pairs for sale, they’re going to jump on them.”

Hold-backs don’t just occur in the opening hours. Months after the box office opened, more blocks of tickets were released for the Bruno Mars show. On June 14 — four months after tickets initially went on sale — 72 premium seats on the floor and in the lower bowl appeared on the Ticketmaster site. On Aug. 7, another 144 tickets were released. Had those tickets been released earlier, fans who purchased more expensive seats might have opted for cheaper tickets.

“They’re artificially driving the price up. They’re artificially giving the impression of high demand,” said class action lawyer Tony Merchant, who launched a lawsuit against Ticketmaster in January after Canada’s Competition Bureau accused the company of price-gouging.

It worked out well for me today since I have Kaiser insurance now and Walgreens doesn't even take it. The coupon lowered the price from $85 to $35. That's cheap enough to not even bother with trying to get Kaiser to cover it.

And actually the finding out the price options was pretty painless.

But lol at 90 ritalin costing the same as half a viagra. I don't say this about a lot of things but the drug market would be so much better if the government ran this whole show. Profit motive + healthcare = bad.

Sumo question: It seems the match starts when both guys get in the stance, having both hands on the ground (more or less). The way it seems to play out is that one guy gets settled, then the second guy will get close, pause, then quickly touch down and charge. What's the strategy here? Be the first guy, and be more firmly settled, or be the second guy, and have the advantage of a quicker burst? Are there rules about who has to get in the stance first?

Also, that Georgian guy seems way more muscular than everyone else. Any chance he's juicing? What are the rules around that in sumo? Do they test?

The rule is simply that the match starts when both guys have both of their fists down. I think there's a bit of psychology and mind games as to who gets both hands down first, like who draws first in an Old West standoff --I think the guy in that match let himself get psyched out, he clearly wasn't ready.

From what I can tell, they do test, I have no idea if it juicing is a common practice. One or two guys have been caught smoking weed, which is apparently considered a major scandal for the sport.

Yeah, there looks to be some gamesmanship there but I wasn't sure how rules-constrained it was.

Weed seems like a major performance enhancing drug when you're being asked to choke down 10,000 calories worth of rice pudding each day.

Yeah, I saw that, which prompted me to ask the question. He had the other dude like a foot off the ground, and that other dude was very large.

Hakuho still selling the heel angle. Did you see him give Ichinojo that unnecessary shove after he was out?

How does he ever lose? Dude can just pick up a yokozuna and walk him out of the ring, I don’t know how four guys managed to get the best of him.
