Why, then, do blacks who are older than 65 live longer than whites?

Timothy J. Cunningham, the lead author of the report, said the lower death rate among older black Americans first emerged in 2011. He attributed it to “weathering.”

Black Americans who are younger than 65 tend to die more often than whites from chronic diseases like diabetes, strokes and heart disease.

As a result, Dr. Cunningham said, black Americans who make it to 65 are comparatively healthier than their white peers, because many of those who are most susceptible to chronic diseases have already died.

This disparity, and the differences in death rates generally, involve social factors as much as medical ones, Dr. Cunningham added.

Thomas is likely going to hold onto his seat for another 15+ years. Unlikely he decides to retire at any time.
Not sure I agree. Thomas won't retire with a Democrat in office, but he might retire in the next twelve months. I'm not sure that he loves being on the court as much as most justices do.

It might refer to the poster's age. Views are pretty in line with most octogenarians.

It’s a little-known fact that Thomas actually died five years ago and has been replaced with a paper-mache mock-up.

Have you seen Clarence Thomas? That man doesn’t eat healthy. He grew up in the south.

So given that Trump has 2.5 years to go and presuming that no SCOTUS replacement would be made in 2020 thus reducing Trump's effective remaining term to 1.5 years, perhaps there is at least a 15-20% chance that he gets a 3rd pick in his 1st term.

Re: SCOTUS BOWL 2018

If the Democrats are hoping for RBG to use her retirement as a political ploy to affect the 2020 Presidential Election, I suppose we should expect her to retire sometime around July/August 2020. This has a high level of risk associated with it though as it may also reinvigorate GOP supporters -- especially if RvW is not actually repealed in the meantime.

I would expect the GOP leadership will hold the SCOTUS appointment as a carrot for the right-leaning electorate.

I think that would be a very rare event. Because I think a massive "underground railroad" would form to bring even poor woman to one of tens of thousands of health care workers who trained themselves to do the procedure and wouldn't be stopped by a law that they disagreed with.

Actually, I would suggest that the near certainty of such an underground railroad should be pointed out to those who would change the law since such a change would thus not achieve their aims and would just cause them a massive headache.

Trump: We are going to repeal Roe vs Wade by nominating SCJs who oppose it.

Sklansky: Once people explain to them the underground railroad, they will change their mind.

Sensible, responsible balanced, even friendly and pragmatic behavior makes it very hard for the enemy to manipulate your intentions and trivialize them, caricature them and make the centrist in the middle that decide elections like or dislike you and your methods. Hysterical behavior rarely wins.

In order to do all the great things you need to govern first and when you govern you need to be reasonable to not lose it so easily to backwards marching conservative idiots offering them chances to trivialize you.

I am not alone in this. I was one of the first though to point out how important it is to treat others properly with patience, confidence and even love for their potential to become better and reject their failed ideas and not create the conditions that screw up your own good causes.

Here is something to that effect that you may find harder to ignore and call it ilk because although i do not agree with everything he says he is exactly the kind of sanity needed to win back US for sensible liberals everywhere. In order to do the great things you need to win first. And you need to inspire not tilt the undecided.

Re: SCOTUS BOWL 2018

There were rumors of Thomas retiring this week, and my (obviously wild) speculation is that he changed his mind when he heard Kennedy had decided to step down. That means, imo, that the "runner runner" scenario will be even harder to bink, since Thomas will probably retire a year from now. Dems will need to get control of the Senate this year (nearly impossible) and then starting in 2019 block any hearings for 1.5 years until the 2020 pres election.

There might not be enough one times left in the universe.
