Basically all of Ukrainian history is different foreign actors ****ing with the Ukrainians and getting away scot-free. Kiev was literally founded by a bunch of Vikings who cruised in and decided to subjugate the natives, which they did very successfully until the Mongols showed up.

Until a few years ago I believed I was Austrian on my father's side. Then he started scanning a bunch of family documents and it turned out that meant that when his parents were growing up the city they were in (Czernowitz) was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. I do remember my grandmother always singing "Edelweiss". But since obviously then the area has changed hands a ton of times and is now very much Ukraine.

China's claim to those islands is the same as anyone's claims to any piece of territory. We want it and we will take it.
11-27-2018 , 11:52 AM
Kind of like the USA's claim to, you know, the USA.
11-27-2018 , 11:52 AM
Well, they are building the islands.

No worries, non-Russian stooge Greenwald is on the case.

11-27-2018 , 12:21 PM

I mean Greenwald is a smart guy who understands the internet and Twitter and all that.

Edelweiss isn’t actually an Austrian folk song it was made up for the Sound of Music movie—which Austrians almost uniformly haven’t seen.

I just got back from Salzburg las month and I went on a Sound of Music tour when there.

Interesting. Maybe she was a big fan of The Sound of Music lol. It was a long time ago - I'll have to ask my dad. I distinctly remember making her a music box that played a song she loved, and my recollection is that it was Edelweiss, but I could also be creating memories that aren't real. That happens!

It does—but if you heard it here she may just like the movie. I don’t think the aversion to the movie extends to Austrians in USA

He made his name being a contrarian against mainstream beliefs solely for the sake of being one. When you've been playing the same note for nearly 20 years, it's hard to suddenly learn to play a new one. If that means pushing a Kremlin talking point being used to justify invading Ukraine, then so be it.

Ukraine really seems to be on their own here. The US and EU certainly aren't going to go out of their way to stop Russia and Ukraine doesn't have anything close to the strength to fight off Russia themselves.

Wait, how does being against literal Nazi's make one an awful human being?

He's pushing a Kremlin talking point that paints Ukraine as some kind of protectorate of Neo-Nazis as a diversion while Russia launches attacks on their ships in their waters.

Basically, it's Glenn being Glenn: pushing pro-Russian propaganda without a single thought other than 'I bet this will trigger the libs'.
11-29-2018 , 12:14 AM
So, are you saying that there aren't literal Nazi's in the Ukrainian government or integrated into the Ukrainian security forces?

even an idiot can figure out what he's saying, stfu with this tired old routine

Tired old routine, really? I thought with Trump's presidency and the alt-right in ascendance criticising Nazi's was back in fashion. I guess you didn't notice.

What does Ukraine containing Nazi groups within its borders have to do with Putin anyway? Is Putin there to rid the Ukraine of it's Nazi problem or something? Nah. Just a bunch of bs.

Quote:
"To be clear, the Kremlin’s claims that Ukraine is a hornets’ nest of fascists are false: far-right parties performed poorly in Ukraine’s last parliamentary elections, and Ukrainians reacted with alarm to the National Militia’s demonstration in Kiev."
Maybe Drumpf will invite Putin and his troops to help us with our own Nazi issues?!

Well, it has to do with everyone, especially when they've trained American white supremacists groups that have been linked to hate crimes. Another chickens coming home to roost scenario, though only minor so far. I guess Russia's interest is that their ideology is primarily anti-Russian meanwhile around half the country is ethnically Russian.

Also election results don't tell the full story as these fascist groups may lack popular support but since they were the key shock troops in the Maiden coup, there leaders were given key ministries in the post-coup governement and there militias, which have since been integrated into the Ukraine army and are national guard provide the bulk of the troops waging war against the ethnically Russian provinces in the East.

Calling attention to this situation and condemning these groups and the Ukraine government's association with them as Greenwald frequently does is no form an implicit justification of Russian actions, that's an entirely different dissociation. But on this point he's 100% right.
