Rich (Now with the Upper Middle Class) Rich (Now with the Upper Middle Class)

Well there is rich and there is affluent.
Falcon's guide is the best so far though.

Where does "wealthy" kick in?
07-11-2014 , 12:47 PM
fascinating to get a glimpse inside the worldview of others

There are the people who can eat money and there are the people who have no money to eat, with all the various degrees in between.

That isn't standard rich guy stuff in you guys view? Like is rich drives a German car and plays golf once a week?
07-11-2014 , 12:53 PM
My boss golfs and drives a German car, but he makes poverty wages of less than 2 mil.

Obligatory Chris Rock: Shaq is rich, the person who signs his checks is wealthy.

"Here Shaq buy yourself a bouncing car! "

When you can forego payment of your water bill in Detroit without threat of it being shut off

Nah dude just filter the water from the lake your house is abutting

i tend to look at wealthy by how my relatives live: when you can buy several properties for your child to manage because his job isn't panning out so well for him, you might be wealthy

Nobody said that you need 120k to get into the middle class. Most middle class people make less.
07-11-2014 , 02:21 PM
Most of middle class below 120k, 120k not upper middle class

Smh

The only non-completely arbitrary way to do this is to establish percentiles within a given region.

Poor: 0-20th percentile
Lower middle class: 20th-40th
Middle class: 40th-60th
Upper middle class: 60th-80th
Upper class: 80th-100th

99-100th = various levels of rich

So if I'm in the 85th percentile for Manhattan, I'm upper class. Subjective ideas about what kind of lifestyle = upper class are silly.

UMC is your kind of people, the truly wealthy are your social betters, and the merely middle class are your inferiors. It's totally relative and Max is very rich, so of course his idea of UMC is utterly distorted. (People who aren't rich use the simple three-class framework of lower, middle, and upper to direct their snobbery.)
Its the opposite. My parents are very middle class and their salaries combined were prob close to the 120k inflation adjusted. Nobody has ever called them upper middle class and they certainly don't think of themselves as that. My wifes family is upper middle class and the distinctions are fairly obvious. I just think stuff like paying for college and being worried about retirement are not issues for the upper middle class.

Well you're wrong and super sheltered.

Lol wat? This is a mathematical fact regardless of where you put the cutoff. If middle class is between 30k-60k. A person making 55k makes more than most middle class people and is not upper middle class.

Any butler worth hiring has his own butler.

And I obv wasn't talking about butlers. I don't think I know anybody who has or ever had a butler and I would be very inclined to call somebody that does rich based on that alone. But live in nannies for UMC couples that both work and may have a combined income just <200k is not outrageous if the child has special needs or until he/she can go to school for most of the day. They might decide not to get one but it is in the realm of possibilities.

Sorry to shatter your worldview, but your family was upper middle class.

Upper middle class is not a subset of the middle class. See how they group here for example
