Dude, he like works for the government and applies the formula someone else thought of.

This is a very important topic though. If we can't properly define what rich is we won't know who it's ok to steal from.

Won't be able to find a two bedroom with a doorman for much less than 3500/mo

3500 for 2br with doorman would be an incredible deal, think 5k+ (assuming decent location)

there is a lot of public housing in NYC that is much cheaper than these standard rates, but I guess you have to apply for it or whatever (I honestly don't know anything about the process, just that it's probably 1/3 of what the market value would be, possibly less)

keep in mind those are generally all in huge project buildings that are dirty and in less than desirable locations (typically)

Yeah you gotta live in Manhattan. So, I thought we couldn't afford a doorman and stuff unless we were mega rich or something?

that's pretty much in the Bronx and probably a fake listing since it's on craigslist

2nd one is on the far edge of Queens and in a completely suburban area with no access to anything w/o a car

also keep in mind you'd be paying 15% of the yearly rent as a broker fee and would have to pass tons of background/income checks to get even these places (must make 40x monthly rent, etc)

Per year? I've never seen requirements laid out like that.

Also, ITT we learn the average person lives in NYC.

yep

So like for 1k rent you'd need to show income of 40k per year (and must have history of it, or else you need a guarantor in the tri-state area with 80x monthly rent in income).

I just went through this looking for a new place a little over a month ago. We offered to pay the entire year's rent up front (lol poker players) and most landlords balked, despite the fact that they could obviously make more from investing that money than getting a little bit each month from someone else. Fortunately we got somewhere that just allowed us to put up a 6 month security deposit and pay month to month(still sucks, but whatever, really had no choice).

Some things I notice between this thread and food stamp thread:

Food Stamp thread:

- poor need to find the cheapest crap hole they can find even if it's a burden on them when they can't afford vehicles and such
- poor should be working harder to get off the dole and be going to grocery stores across town by bus to save on a few sale items

Rich thread:

- 3k? wtf you talkin' bout. They don't even have doormen
- gotta live in the most expensive place in town, god forbid person may have to use public transportation, or buy a car

You know that in the age of the internet this is easily proven false, right?

lolikes indeed

great stuff elliot, that Connecticut apartment really showed me. You really think a family of four living on 50k in NYC/Chicago/LA/SF is doing well?
10-07-2012 , 08:27 PM
I think that Elliot earlier itt said something like living in a city like NYC was like part of a lifestyle so a 40k family in NYC is the same level of poorness as a 40k family in rural Iowa.
10-07-2012 , 08:28 PM
not being a NY'er, but those listings don't list the size (sq ft), and from what I know, a 6' X 8' space with a door can be classified as a bedroom.

enjoy living in a shoebox for $1500

Frankly elliot, it's kind of sad you have so much butthurt leftover from being a mod here that you get your tits lit and post Connecticut rent prices when I'm pretty sure you agree with my basic point.

Seriously dude, get over it.

lol!! You realize that people can click on that link for themselves, don't you?

So just for the record, I'll give you one last chance: you are sticking to "rent in nyc for a 2br starts around 3k", with a "rofl" to boot. Right?
