"Get by" meaning "avoid starvation" or "afford xboxes and ipods"?
Holy cow this this the internet... people speak like that all the time to get points across...
By "get by" I mean, a person with 20k is pretty much only getting the essentials, i.e. they will not be saving any money, housing will be very modest, food budget will be tight, probably no tv, phone or internet. You also probably won't have very good insurance or none at all, meaning taxpayers get the expensive ER bill. If you have a family it is going to be really hard. A person with 200k doesn't have those problems. It's not just about "xboxes and ipods".
I can tell this conversation isn't going to get anywhere, which is crazy b/c I'm for less taxes. I just find it to be common sense that a person's "essentials" make up a much greater part of a 20k/yr person's budget than that of a 200k/yr person. With that, it also makes sense than if you take more money from the poorer person, there is a greater chance you will be cutting into their essentials and therefore they will suffer more than the well off person.
