You guys invented random celebs who do nothing but are famous for some reason.

Didnt Warhol invent the concept with his factory superstars?

I cant imagine who you are thinking of.

I mean, set aside your potentially questionable ability to accurately predict poor people's conception of your lifestyle, you're still not getting the picture. If you aren't rich by your personal definition, your personal definition is so extreme as to be meaningless.

It's like someone who is 85 claiming they aren't "old" because there are totally people who reach 110, and also just the other day you went for the walk in the park just like anybody else does.
can't believe i'm saying this, but home run ^^

regardless of the efficacy or fairness of these taxes, its pretty insane not to think (by the standard U.S. definition, not your warped sense of reality) that you don't meet what 99% of people define as rich

He is the future King, regularly represents the country on state visits and heads at least one major charity (probably a lot, im too lazy to look it up).

He may be famous for who his parents were but he actually does some pretty important stuff to justify his fame. If he counts as pointless celebs then pretty much every celeb is a pointless celeb.

Fly, are you still a student? do you have a mortgage, kids, student loans, real job, real bills, and/or live in a major city?

I only have 3 of those(OMG WHICH THREE?), but by your use of and/or I can answer that question "yes."

Regardless, what's the relevance? Because this smells a lot like you trying to ****ing lecture me about the troubles you see with a quarter million dollar income(which you, natch, probably don't have yourself, right?).

I mean, my whole point was about the callous and delusional nature of high earners, and you're trying to cast me as unaware of the hardscrabble life of a NYC big law associate? I mean, if I got to write your response to make you look bad and me look right, I'd probably go with something like "do you have a mortgage, kids, student loans, real job, real bills, and/or live in a major city?"

In all seriousness, this is the most ******ed thread I've seen ever. WTF are you even arguing about?
09-22-2010 , 11:14 PM
And we are missing the bigger point here: Todd Henderson, a freaking law professor, is so innumerate and illinformed that he thinks Obama's plan to CUT HIS TAXES(from estimates people have done) is demonization of the rich.

Ties in nicely with that Wall Street douchebag bitching that Obama is treating them like piñatas. There's class warfare in this country, but ain't from liberals riling up the poor against the rich.

So anyhow, what are the actual arguments being put forth here?

Fly a lot of people can make 150-200k in a regular job. We want to encourage people to take the risk to start their own innovative company and make a fortune. High tax rates prevent this. Do you see why? I mean the entire problem with your politics is that you lack understanding of human motivation completely and it astounds me, because otherwise you are a very smart guy.
09-22-2010 , 11:51 PM
I'm in my late twenties. That seems to have even less relevance than whether I have children or student loans. What age do I need to be before Todd Henderson stops being an idiot?

samsonh, we had a ton of people starting their own innovative companies with Clinton-era tax rates.
09-22-2010 , 11:57 PM
making 250K without massive amounts of debt from like med school etc = wealthy

1 million+ per year = rich

but right now making 100k a year seems rich to a whole lot of people.

If you live in Chandler, AZ and paid off your degree from ASU and are making 250K a year...most people are going to say "He's rich/living the high life."

If you live in Los Angeles most people are going to say "He's doing pretty well for himself"

Bahahahahhaha.

High tax rates do not prevent people from starting innovative companies and making their fortunes from it. That is just ridiculous.

Wat? Amount of venture capital available for start ups is not proportional to to tax rates? Really?

Same for the 34 year old successful business owner

Same for the 42 year old multi-millionaire.

First would probably need some money to start his business and second would have significantly less money available for a risky investment.
