The Resistance: Actvism, protests and more! The Resistance: Actvism, protests and more!

In Europe and America there's a growing feeling of hysteria
Conditioned to respond to all the threats
that exxon mobil's mission begets
Tony the tiger says everything is great
and that change can wait
It'd be such an ignorant thing to do
If the Republicans love their children too

How can I say my little boy from Halliburton's deadly toy?
There is no monopoly on common sense
On either side of the political fence
We share the same biology, regardless of ideology.
Believe me when I say to you,
I hope the Republicans love their children too.

There is no historical precedent
For our horrible president
he doesn't believe in climate change
science just really ain't his thang
Mr. Trump says we'll drill for you
I don't subscribe to his point of view
Believe me when I say to you,
I hope the Republicans love their Children too.

Protesters and other attorneys complained that the core group of so-called “black bloc” protesters responsible for the most serious damage eluded arrest. The people who got caught, they said, were bystanders, protesters not involved in violence and observers used by the groups to monitor police behavior and tactics.

Jeffrey Light, the Washington attorney who filed the federal suit, said he is alleging unlawful arrest and excessive force. He said police were making mass arrests “without individualized probable cause,” unable to link individuals to specific acts of violence...
It appears there will be show trials.

Speaking of overcharging, the main charge against the Malheur occupiers carries a six year max sentence, while these peeps are looking at 10. Like all show trials, the government will attempt to demonize alleged actions taken by different people, in different places, at different times, in an attempt to railroad some peeps into prison, ruin lives, and send an ice-cold chilling message.

Great ****ing thread. Been thinking a lot over the last few weeks about ways to make a purposeful impact and become more socially active in the face of this impending disaster. The masses of people in Boston and around the world was the tipping point for me to put thoughts into action and seek out local organizations to give my time to. Nice work in here! Glad I went against by better judgement to see what was brewing over here in the politard forum

Boston was lit. I'm a recent transplant to the city from the midwest and being among the waves of people that descended on the Commons throughout the morning is something I'll never forget. Would do again

Some more background on infamous rogue cop P.Newsham...

The hard-handed approach was familiar to local civil rights attorneys, who point out that Peter Newsham, the city’s interim police chief, ordered another contentious mass arrest as an assistant chief in 2002...

[Defense lawyer] Light says he finds it interesting that police in the nation’s capital took such a harsh approach to activism following Newsham’s assumption of his role... [defense lawyers] Turley and Verheyden-Hilliard, meanwhile, describe it as an unwelcome resumption of conduct that could again put the city on the hook for damages.

"I have real doubts about interim chief Newsham's capacity to follow the law as he has at no point expressed a sufficient understanding of his own wrongful conduct from 15 years ago and he was never disciplined for his conduct," Verheyden-Hilliard says.

“It was deeply problematic for many associated with the [2002] lawsuit[s] to see Peter Newsham as the acting Chief of Police,” Turley says. “Newsham was the primary party responsible for the mass arrest that ultimately costs the city tens of millions in litigation costs and damages. He showed appalling judgment during the [2002] protests and little true regret after the mass arrest was found to have violated the constitutional rights of hundreds of people.”...
Some other tidbits from the same story. First, some more reporting about what happened inside the kettle...

Quote:
... Friday, police in the nation’s capital walloped protesters, reporters and legal observers with batons and doused them with skin-burning pepper spray as projectiles sporadically flew in the other direction... police... sprayed a stoop-backed older woman and a man on crutches before repeatedly striking a journalist who identified himself and sought to pass... “You are all going to jail!” an officer declared after giving a penned-in group a fresh coat of pepper spray... [journalist] Rubinstein... reported he had been struck in the face by one of many flash grenades...
Then of course, we got time travel. Common knowledge is the mass arrests were an exigent reaction to that limo burning. This requires to trips in that magical DeLorean... one to retcon the limo, the other to erase the hour+ folks were kettled.

Quote:
...Curiously, the charging papers for the mass-arrested group state... big-ticket limo fire that occurred Friday afternoon in a different location and after the mass arrests took place...

Arrests Friday began about an hour after the 235 detainees were surrounded, allowing time for deliberation...

Just a thought, but a possible tactic for obstructing the Keystone Pipeline might be protesting and trying to block any use of non-US steel. Not only will Trump's demand for US steel probably make the project uneconomical, it's a violation of GATT/WTO agreements and would result at least in more time in court.

Wait how does burning one gallon of gas put 20lbs of CO2 in the atmosphere? Is that including all the energy expended in extracting, refining and transporting the gas as well?

I'm not endorsing this statistic or rejecting it, just explaining.

It doesn't exactly "put" that much CO2 in the atmosphere. Gasoline is a hydrocarbon: hydrogen and carbon. When burned the hydrogen and carbon separate and the carbon combines with oxygen from the atmosphere to make CO2 (and other stuff).

But a gallon of water is about 8 lbs, and gasoline is lighter than water. Furthermore, like you note, gasoline isn't all carbon. For about a 2:1 ratio of hydrogen to carbon on average, that would be about a 6:1 ratio of the contribution to the mass from carbon compared to hydrogen. So, you'd only expect about 6-7ish lbs per gallon from nothing but carbon atoms. Unless they're going with lbs of CO2? Because that would be about 2.7 lbs of O2/lb carbon, so that's another 16 lbs, so I guess we're pretty much to 20 then.

Yes. lbs of CO2.

2 oxygen atoms from the atmosphere for (almost) every carbon atom.

gotcha, makes more sense now

I scienced it out and 1 gal of octane should yield 18lb of CO2.

U.S. President Donald Trump's administration has instructed the Environmental Protection Agency to remove the climate change page from its website, two agency employees told Reuters, the latest move by the newly minted leadership to erase ex-President Barack Obama's climate change initiatives.

The employees were notified by EPA officials on Tuesday that the administration had instructed EPA's communications team to remove the website's climate change page, which contains links to scientific global warming research, as well as detailed data on emissions. The page could go down as early as Wednesday, the sources said.

Jerry Brown's yearly "State of the State" address

Quote:
A few moments ago, I swore into office our new attorney general. Like so many others, he is the son of immigrants who saw California as a place where, through grit and determination, they could realize their dreams. And they are not alone, millions of Californians have come here from Mexico and a hundred other countries, making our state what it is today: vibrant, even turbulent, and a beacon of hope to the rest of the world.

We don't have a Statue of Liberty with its inscription: "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free..." But we do have the Golden Gate and a spirit of adventure and openness that has welcomed - since the Gold Rush of 1848 - one wave of immigration after another.

For myself, I feel privileged to stand before you as your governor, as did my father almost sixty years ago. His mother, Ida, the youngest of eight children, was born in very modest circumstances, not very far from where we are gathered today. Her father arrived in California in 1852, having left from the Port of Hamburg, aboard a ship named "Perseverance."

It is that spirit of perseverance and courage which built our state from the beginning. And it is that spirit which will get us through the great uncertainty and the difficulties ahead.

California is not turning back. Not now, not ever.
